Could anyone provide a good tutorial/guide for painting facial features on 1/35 figures?
Scroll back through this topic and you will find some great tips …
Ì leave my search for a guide for dinner, and then come back, and the next few scrolls revealed this! Thank you Lazarus for the guide. I will be using it soon.
Is there a way to rename bookmarks on this site? I’d like to organize mine and be able to identify them.
Not on the site but where ever you save your bookmarks you can call them whatever you want and/or create a folder for subgrouping of things. On my photo I have a folder for figures bookmarking lots of techniques and builds.
Just got started. Going to see what I can do with this guy. Hopefully when im done it will be somewhat presentable. There have been some extraordinary posts so far. Good job everyone.
I am happy with my progress so far. The eyes are hard to do, but the rest of the skin went well. Next are the details (after having touched up the helmets).
The driver is complete (for the most part)! I assume this will count as my submission to the campaign (please confirm if it counts, whoever is head of the campaign). I might touch him up a bit when I take him off of the cork, but other than maybe touching up the boot soles and some dust, He is complete. I’m happy with the result!
Well, here’s my last entry for the campaign. Now, this fella took some doing. I had to get it done around loads of other stuff so, not much time to get it finished. Managed it though….just!
I’ve also been doing some other stuff for the last couple of months so, I thought I’d throw them in too. Here’s Tamiya’s US Recon team. It’s the first kit that I’ve ever pre-ordered and I certainly wasn’t disappointed! Have a look…
And finally, my last crack at Italian camo. It’s a lovely little figure from CMK. Cheap as well, only cost about seven quid. I’ve got you to thank for this, Rich! You started it!
I think I finally got it right. Took long enough….

Now that’s a Panzerfaust!
that is quite the collection of great looking figures.
That is one incredible run of completed figures Lazarus! Each one exquisite in its own right. That last one with the Italian camo is fantastic! That’s the look I was going for and you nailed it. You are a machine Lazarus!
Thanks lads, I think the machine has broken down now though. I’m starting to feel burned out and losing the mojo now. Only so much green and brown you can paint…. Counted up today and found that I’ve done 9 1/16 figures and 16 1/35 figures so far this year! Time to change methinks….
After seeing some of the SF and historical builds on this thread, I might head in that direction. Might even build a tank
.
This campaign has been brilliant! I think it’s taken the fear and mystery of figure painting away from a lot of people and given them the confidence to tackle things they would have shied away from before. I’m proud to have been a part of that. I know for a fact that I’ve grown in confidence with it and I’ve watched others do so as well. There really has been some sterling work done on this page. That, for me, makes this campaign a success!
Happy modelling lads!

I had better pics but silly me i did the windows 11 upgrade and it was killing my laptop. Of course this was after i uploaded the pics and deleted them from my phone. Originally it was going to be a white surcoat but it wasn’t working. I’ve got more to practice on, i bought 15 at a game convention a few years ago.
Painting 1/35 pupils is hard, how do you guys do it?
A small paint brush, little bit paint and lots of patience.
To be honest I don’t; not that I don’t admire those who can, hats off to them, but I find it beyond my capabilities. To be honest, when looking at an actual person from a distance that equates to a 1:35 sized figure, you can’t see that much detail at all; however, my method obtains an effect and may not be to everyone’s liking but this is what I do:
First, I paint the face with a standard overall flesh, in this case a Humbrol flesh tone ( still mainly use enamels).
I then darken it using a rust colour (red brown) and apply this to the eye sockets, ear centres, and lips.
I make a slightly lighter version of that and add it to the sides of the nose and to any facial “lines” say, emanating from the nasal area down towards the mouth, or from the eyes. Sometimes I also use this to accentuate any jawline, or exposed neck where it meets the uniform collar.
Lastly I add a little white to the flesh and use that to highlight the actual nose, and sometimes the chin. I also use the darker tone to delineate fingers, and the lighter version to emphasise knuckles.
This shows what I end up with (taken from a recently completed vignette)
which works for me(!)
I ended up using a similar workflow to yours. I used a mid-flesh type color, then gave it a red-ish wash to give the face some blood, then used lighter paint to highlight the bridge of the nose, ears, cheekbones, etc… Then for my driver I used a dark wash to give a 5 o’clock shadow effect.
@ LZ. Such brilliant effort! And you out of all have earned a break. However, I can definitely see a tank in your future… And I’m most certain it will be blessed with one of your camo schemes! ![]()

@ Brian (BootsDMS). Well said, and useful for those like myself with Eyesight failing to the extreme. Believe me, my remaining pupil has tried painting pupils. However, there just comes a point where I need to keep Franken-Figuring as fun as possible.
In addition, I’ve become a follower of ‘Francis Ford Coppola’s School of Pics.’ You might notice that by all means, my figures don’t look at the camera!… don’t look at the camera!…

@ Ryan (Tank_1812) a.k.a. Fearless Leader. This has been a fun and very informative campaign! Thank’s for running things around here!
