I am not pay much attention on this project. I’m making sevral model right now. But on this Canadian Sherman I paid a lot of attention on research and correcting errors,
Thank you! I’ll try to draw a sketch later.
Quick point, the antenna’s should be No 19 set type, A & B base, looks like you have the US style mounted.
Ok, I see
In these days, I am slowly checking the photos of real tank to correct the details. Including the periscope guards, the tail tube, the rear fender and the antenna base. For the periscope guards, I used a TREX 3D printed set because it is thin enough and the cross section is round rather than the wrong rectangle like PE. These periscope guards are very thin and need to be removed and installed with great care. The other part of the set is the fastening of the steel cable. According to the history photos, there was no steel cable installed, so I glued these two fastening devices directly.
The tail tube, this tube I don’t really understand what it does, so I can only call it the word “tube”. The details of the original tube plastic parts were so blurred that you could hardly know it was a tube. So I replaced a copper pipe, but the hole size was too small and the cross section was wrong. So I expanded the hole size and flattened the cross section. It turned out pretty good at the end. In addition, according to the photos of the real, it is confirmed that the rear fender is not installed. So I had to remove the glued rear fender and patch the fender mounting base and screw holes with plastic sheets.
Thank you Anthony for your reminding. I have noticed this error of certificate a few days ago. So I’ve purchased two 3D printed UK antenna sets from Heavy hobby. But when I received it, only one antenna base (left) matched the target. There is also a base for number 19 antenna base (right) that does not have the correct parts.
So I took a closer look at the shape of the antenna base is not very complicated, the key is that its main body is still a gourd-shaped rotating body. So I can grab a piece of plastic stick with a electric power tool and spin it at high speed with a hand-held file. This gourd-shaped antenna base can be made into a simple lathe. Finally, some other parts can be glued together to make this 19 antenna base, the finnal effect is OK.
I believe that tube is the exhaust pipe for the APU, a small generator unit that was used to power the radios and other systems when the engine was not running.
Ken
That is indeed what it is Ken, the exhaust for a one cylinder Briggs & Stratton “pony engine” hooked to a generator to power radio and turret traverse when the engine was off. Now known as the APU.
@top3dd Feng, question on the TREX parts. Have you noticed any issues with the 3D printed parts becoming brittle over time? Especially if exposed to sunlight?
You really should wear gloves when doing these close-up photos. The world now has your fingerprint.
I noticed it will be brittle exposing in sun light. so I try to avoid it be exposed. And that another reason why I choose the PE part for the lamp guards.
If I used the printe parts, I’ll spary heavy black putty on it immediately to isolate the sun light. I heard that will protect it to be brittle.
Hi Rick, thanks for your advice. I’ll paint the tank so I don’t care about the fingerprint. When I start painting I’ll be careful to avoid the fingerprint.
The current phase has reached the stage of preparing for spraying, except for the rear exhaust deflectors that has not been completed, the other parts have almost been modified and assembled. Now I take some photos of the whole tank as a record before spraying phase.
Oh, wow, I didn’t know there were still Shermans on duty in the early 70s.
Hi Phil, these Shermans were a part of the Ontario Regiment (RCAC) based in Oshawa, Ontario. It also noted that the Regiment operated Shermans until 1972.
These three photos were taken on September 11, 1971, when the regiment paraded in honor of R. Samuel McLaughlin’s 100th birthday. McLaughlin was a Canadian industrial titan and honorary Colonel of the Ontario Regiment.
