1/350 Airfix Type 45 HMS Dragon or is it Dauntless...?

Hey folks :slightly_smiling_face:

a few more preparatory details before attaching the hull sides to the deck and hull frames…

First, checking other builds around the net and checking photo references, I decided to move the anchor aft and up from the moulded position. It’ll need some filler and sanding but will do for now

To make things easier down the track, I decided to paint the visible portion of the inside of the hulls… Adhesion surfaces masked of course

Have a look at this

and this

Sigh!.. :man_facepalming: This is what makes me question the idea of spending any coin on the Veteran aftermarket…
Deck colour picked out

After removing the moulded on hose reels, I painted the hangar rear wall to make it easier to finish off once assembled

Along with the inside too

I’ve started attaching the hull sides to the deck and hull frames so there’ll be more soon… Thanks for looking :slightly_smiling_face:

Russ,

Nice attention to detail in correcting the anchor position. It is one of those nuances most of us would never have noticed in the completed build, but if you are anything like me, once you became aware of it the inaccuracy would have always caught your eye!

I am not sure because its so very subtle but you may have the tiniest of warping there… :astonished:

As Tim says with the anchor! Nice job mate!

Well, pretty obvious what you mean about those fitting issues…still I hope you’ll be ‘fighting through’, you’ve done a great job on her so far. And since it’s no longer a type 45 destroyer but you named her HMS Dauntless, you should not give up on her!!

@TimReynaga Thanks Tim :slightly_smiling_face: it’s those little details that I enjoy.

@McRunty Rory, LoL! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@JJ1973 Jan, don’t worry mate, I’ll push through for a finish, what kind of a finish that is remains to be seen

sigh… clamp and glue

clamp and glue again because of part warpage

tape to hold parts together and cross your fingers it holds it correctly while the glue cures

The fun is yet to begin: the forecastle deck and hull sides are a long ways apart… :man_facepalming:

Russelle,

Been away for awhile. Even though you had to use clamps the fit I can see in the photos look very good which means you doing a fine job getting through the issues. Even real life ship builders had to use force and clamps to make things conform.

@d6mst0 good to have you back Mark :slightly_smiling_face:

At the moment I feel like taking to it with a :hammer: hammer and dolly, just like a real life ship builder :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Well! After what seems like a non-stop marathon of gluing, clamping and waiting over and over again it seems that the hull form is finally together… :cold_sweat:

Take a look at the warpage in the lower hull!

5mm at the centre

That required some serious clamping and waiting 24 hours before releasing the clamp!

This is the best I could do with the bulge in the side of the hull

I’ve back blocked the area so that when I start sanding away the bulge I don’t break through!

More mismatch of the hull top/bottom under the forecastle deck

More clamping and gluing, this time warpage in the hull side/deck joint

So, we might finally have something that I can start filling and sanding!
Overall, the hull parts have been pulled together after a lot of fettling and clamping and it seems square and true… :grinning:
Thanks again for looking :slightly_smiling_face:

I really was planning to get this kit but the more of the issues I see you having, the better the Trumpeter kit is looking…

Keep at it. That will come out with some filler and sanding.
It’s always a problem with large parts like that. At least the plastic has some thickness to it. I remember the hills on their 1/600’s always having the same problems, only wafer thin!

Rory, I’ve heard it said that the Trumpeter kit is not without issues of its own.

To be honest, I’ve seen lots of builds of Airfix’s Type 45 offering and none have flagged the issues this kit has presented with, so maybe it’s just this kit? :female_detective:

My advice: before you commit to buy either brand, ask the retailer if you can inspect the contents and ascertain for yourself that the kit is trouble free before you part with your hard earned coin :moneybag:

PS and I might just be able to whip this one into shape yet :slightly_smiling_face:

Sanding and filling:That’s the plan :slightly_smiling_face: although these days with time being so limited and so many kits in the stash waiting to be built, I find myself drawn to those not requiring as much effort to bring up to standard :astonished:

The best hulls bar non I’ve seen are Tamiya’s: a glorious 2mm wall thickness resulting in very little deformation; 1mm is just too thin to give a good result :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Well, that looks like real shipbuilding - you simply don’t want to know what bending, fettling, clamping (and cheating) is done building real ships… :see_no_evil: :hear_no_evil: :speak_no_evil:

Don’t let your motivation down, Dauntless is getting there, she’s looking all right!

Cheers mate

@JJ1973 @TimReynaga Jan, Tim, thanks guys, really appreciate the encouragement.
I’ve a good feeling that this kit will turn into a lovely model all things considered :slightly_smiling_face:

PS the Dockyard workers are still on medical leave and might not be back until late next week :face_with_head_bandage:

That’s great news, mate! And all the best for your recovery from medical leave!!

a brief update :innocent:

medical leave is gradually being withdrawn from the dockyard and as such, work is slowly resuming on Dauntless… :face_with_head_bandage:

Here’s the hull, attacked with P80 grit sandpaper and ensuing snow drifts

Following on with a Green Putty scum line

As you can see I’ve taped up the hangar and boat bays in an attempt to stop sanding detritus from ingressing upon those regions :cowboy_hat_face:

more soon…

Wow, P80 - that’s some rough treatment and proves just how much correction was needed!

Looks good, though, and I’m really happy to see that HMS Dauntless is already much looking like a Type 45 Destroyer! Nice work, mate! And good to see you’re returning from sick leave…
