a few more preparatory details before attaching the hull sides to the deck and hull frames…
First, checking other builds around the net and checking photo references, I decided to move the anchor aft and up from the moulded position. It’ll need some filler and sanding but will do for now
Nice attention to detail in correcting the anchor position. It is one of those nuances most of us would never have noticed in the completed build, but if you are anything like me, once you became aware of it the inaccuracy would have always caught your eye!
Well, pretty obvious what you mean about those fitting issues…still I hope you’ll be ‘fighting through’, you’ve done a great job on her so far. And since it’s no longer a type 45 destroyer but you named her HMS Dauntless, you should not give up on her!!
Been away for awhile. Even though you had to use clamps the fit I can see in the photos look very good which means you doing a fine job getting through the issues. Even real life ship builders had to use force and clamps to make things conform.
So, we might finally have something that I can start filling and sanding!
Overall, the hull parts have been pulled together after a lot of fettling and clamping and it seems square and true…
Thanks again for looking
Keep at it. That will come out with some filler and sanding.
It’s always a problem with large parts like that. At least the plastic has some thickness to it. I remember the hills on their 1/600’s always having the same problems, only wafer thin!
Rory, I’ve heard it said that the Trumpeter kit is not without issues of its own.
To be honest, I’ve seen lots of builds of Airfix’s Type 45 offering and none have flagged the issues this kit has presented with, so maybe it’s just this kit?
My advice: before you commit to buy either brand, ask the retailer if you can inspect the contents and ascertain for yourself that the kit is trouble free before you part with your hard earned coin
PS and I might just be able to whip this one into shape yet
Sanding and filling:That’s the plan although these days with time being so limited and so many kits in the stash waiting to be built, I find myself drawn to those not requiring as much effort to bring up to standard
The best hulls bar non I’ve seen are Tamiya’s: a glorious 2mm wall thickness resulting in very little deformation; 1mm is just too thin to give a good result
Russ, keep up the fight! I’m wincing, cringing, and thoroughly enjoying watching you wrestle this thing into shape. You are definitely winning this one!
@JJ1973@TimReynaga Jan, Tim, thanks guys, really appreciate the encouragement.
I’ve a good feeling that this kit will turn into a lovely model all things considered
PS the Dockyard workers are still on medical leave and might not be back until late next week
Wow, P80 - that’s some rough treatment and proves just how much correction was needed!
Looks good, though, and I’m really happy to see that HMS Dauntless is already much looking like a Type 45 Destroyer! Nice work, mate! And good to see you’re returning from sick leave…
