1/350 Airfix Type 45 HMS Dragon or is it Dauntless...?

mmm-hm? Does that thing involve exchange of $$ for product?

Is that product floaty?

Does said product require assembly?

Is it of the brass instrument or red box type?

And apparently it was the last one of its kind on ebay in the United States. A current search returns 0 results from the US and only 1 from Canada.

Nice one, Rory! :slightly_smiling_face:

Did you try hobby shops or Airfix US site, as it’s in this year’s catalogue…?

Not available on any of my trusted sites or my local store. Its been avaliable for “pre-order” on Airfix USA since last year so I have zero trust. Also, I got it (with shipping) for less than the price on the Airfix website so that was a total win.

I am curious to see if my one has some of the warps yours did.

Ah… Corona Virus delays!!! :astonished:

Yes, please let us know if yours had any similar problems :slightly_smiling_face::+1:

Meanwhile, the painters have been notified to be on-site at the docks next week

The painters arrived early… primer coat on underside

Russselle,

The finish looks nice and smooth, what brand of primer did you use?

Hi Mark :slightly_smiling_face:

Thankyou for the kind comments.

Believe it or not, I don’t normally use a primer, as enamel paint goes on hot and bonds to the plastic no problems.

However, when there’s filler or PE involved I like to get a uniform base coat down before hitting it with the top coat.

Up till now I’ve been using Humbrol’s enamel primer, but after chatting with Jamie from Sovereign Hobbies, it seems a “primer” type paint isn’t required and I can just use a regular grey, white or black enamel as a base coat before applying the top coat🙂

What colour grey are you going with for the hull and superstructure?

I have to believe Jamie opinion on that, as I was always taught that the primer was only the first coat of paint you put down.

Hi Rory,

I use Colour Coats enamels, for the vertical surfaces, NARN52 (M01) - RN Light Weatherwork Grey (BS 381C 676) and the horizontal decks, NARN54 (M02) - Extra Dark Sea Gray

For the Boot Topping it’s just generic black, and I use NARN42 - Royal Navy WW2 Anti-fouling Red for all RN ships…

Hope this helps :slightly_smiling_face:

It has. I don’t use enamels but the power of the internet has found me a few matches with the brands I do use.

Painting continues, this time levelling coat on top side…

I’m really happy the way the corners have come out after using CA to fill the seams and then sanding them. Checking with silver paint helps too :hugs:

Deck colour, RN Extra Dark Sea Grey, on fw’d deck, hangar roof deck and VLS housing

Once this dries, it’s time to mask up to apply the RN Light weatherwork grey.
Thanks for looking :hugs:

A good reference pic of the decks I found online for our builds.

That’s a great shot Rory, thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

When are you starting your build?

Found a great website called Seaforces that has a lot of great images and not just of the Type 45’s either! Some great images of USS Enterprise CVN-65 too

ps. Update coming soon :sunglasses:

I am in the middle of putting the hanger deck together. Its all painted and ready for a pin wash.

But I have been at that stage for a few weeks now. I am in the middle of a modelling doldrum. Just don’t have the enthusiasm for it right now. Took me 2 weeks just to airbrush a basecoat of olive drab on an M5A1 which isn’t the biggest thing in the world.

I will get back to her when the mojo returns!

@McRunty I hear you Rory! :slightly_smiling_face: I’ve actually got to the point now that I have a new rule: I forbid myself to buy any new kits until I am actually ready to build them! That way my acquisition program doesn’t exceed my life expectancy, and I’m not overwhelmed by the number of kits in my stash! :innocent: Well, at least that’s the plan

To get your mojo going here’s a great article on further planned upgrades to the 45’s!!! :cowboy_hat_face:

Ohh, I have saved that image for reference!

Right now its not really an issue of feeling overwhelmed by the kits yet to be built, its more just a case of being worn down at work etc. When I get home I tend to just vegetate and disengage my brain. It will get better and the juices will flow. My building enthusiasm seems to go in 3 month waves.
