In the 80’s when BDU’s came along. In summer '84 it went army wide for camo cuff out on BDUs, as we could still roll jungle fatigues sleeves in the normal way until their wear out date of August 87 when the hot weather BDUs were introduced. Not to mention that the older ERDL cammies or the fatigues & jungle fatigues did not have a button for a full open cuff like the BDUs did. But up to summer of '84, at least in 5th ID, we rolled the BDU sleeves in a normal manner.
I’m contemplating a vanilla '113 ACAV or vintage NZ Army ride, anything else is extra. Look at all the colourful markings of M 113 vehicles to come out of Vietnam; again, a minor industry in itself.
And, maybe not the best example,
One for the Aussies, cos, you know, Aussies.
I’ll need an A2 conversion, plus some other fittings… smoke grenade launchers and TC’s Dragon mount…
I hope someone makes some IDF updates for this bad boy.
didn’t Verlinden make of these large scale M113’s years ago?
me in the same place driving for Anzac day last year. the guy in the turret is from Australia and was the driver of the carrier in Vietnam ours is painted as a tribute to. we gave him his first drive since August 1969 the day before.
were you with Wai/Wec?
Welcome aboard Mark.
Hi Mark
Was I with Wai/WEC - sort of & not really - did 3 buddy weekends with them in 96, 2 at Atiamuri, one in Waiberia. Have family links to 2nd Waikato Armd Regt, father was OC on disbandment, then he went on to 7 WnHB, OC Alpha Coy, CO late 70’s - early 80’s. Those pics of NZ30543 at the Hastings Pde in 1982 are mine, 7 was on Pde with Wai WEC in support.
Was a regular at Havoc Hobby till it died.
Acquainted with Des & Andrew at Huntly, have visited the shed a number of times, have lots of photos of NZ30549.
Seen many of your posts at Mounted Trooper, really appreciated the measurements for the T50.
Modelling mojo has been lacking of late, got a Haya Centurion the day before a finger op March last year. Finger recovered, mojo not so much.
Pre-ordered the M113, mojo recovery incentive…

i was probably with you on those weekends. i went out to Des’s place when i went up for the WMR 150th birthday. i have 4 of the AFV Club carriers to do (some are for others) and have decal sheets to do our one as i supplied Star Decals reference pictures for one of his new sets when the kit came out. which was good for me as now i don’t have to do very small size painting LOL
me out at Des’s shed in the Tracked Rapier
and managed get get my fat butt into the drivers seat of the Chieftain LOL
Gents, great reading from both, any images of the box on tracks in the field you can share, please,
One of the problems with this kit is selecting a finish, there being so many options, and one in Kiwi camo out back of Waiberia would be a starter for 10. Then there is the possibility of the up armoured one in UN white…
Cool. Do you recall Karl Plas, got my invite from him.
Highlites - hooning around Atiamuri & quarry in the Rovers, vs Sentry at 2.00am in the fog & waking up the next morning with a stream running through the tent.
Hone showing us why trip flares are set up from below & daisy chaining Rovers to extract his from the tailings pond
I have a bunch of Tamiya M113’s I did in NZ MERDC back in the late 70’s. Since got arthritis so only build in 1/16th now, though have 2 X 1/18 M113’s New Millenium brand, the problem with those the upper is zamac (zinc alloy) & drilling out the footman loops is a drill busting exercise.
Looks like Andy’s won’t require that pain.
Need to revisit Des’s shed & do a walkaround & measure of the Chief to progress my Haya Chief build.

standard colours for NZ was NZMERDC (Modified from the Red Desert MERDC)
the brown and tan colours changed over time depending on what was available at the time so brown could be lighter or darker and same with the tan so really you could paint just about any variation and it would be right. the vista white was normally more of an off white/cream colour. they did in mid 90’s paint some in the reverse pattern to how the NZMERDC was designed to try it (as can be seen on the museum ones below) - me in the turret on my crew commanders course
one freshly painted
a line up of some of the museum carriers outside the old gunnery wing you can see the tan is more of a yellow colour and the brown darker on some
in the feild
sometimes you couldn’t see much because of the tussock we hung on the sides

an M125 i was driving
if you want to go different there is Clockwork Orange that was painted by some contractors during a refit and no one knows what they were thinking, the orange was actually brighter than it shows as it was dazzle orange paint. they used it as an enemy party vehicle for a while before it was repainted
colour looks closer in the pic lol
for the UN one i have some good pics of the armour and supplied some to a guy (who i must get back to) that was going to do an EAAK armour upgrade kit for 1/35. i took these while on base for Cambrai weekend
the turret was modified again moving front vision block back down to allow for the ne gun sight and fume extractor moved to above the guns
showing how the armour was mounted
if you want more just ask
i am still friends on FB with Karl he is a nice guy and has a wealth of knowledge with his background (which i wont say on here) hers a couple of shots i found with the rovers and one of our old flyers
me in the middle when i was a bit thinner
back in 93 doing recruiting in Napier and got in the paper
Hi Kylie
I don’t have any personal ones of M113 in the field, took a bunch while at the Waiouru Fair in 89, but they’re all prints, not digital. Have quite a few I’ve copied.
One of which is this
The interesting thing about this is not only the bar mine layer, but the Simfire installed on the vehicle, showing the RX/TX box on the right rear corner as well as the 5-6 detectors on sides & corners. Might be a 3.7AA tin, right of rear hatch too.
I’ve made the Simfire units, but the sunshields require either PE or 3DP

I don’t do FB, but say Hello for me.
Funny, I have a copy of that flyer. When we did the rover trip, Karl was driver, I rode shotgun with C9 on the way down, gympy in the rear on the way back. Crash started a stalled rover at the lights on Cobham Dr. Was a fun weekend.

i got my story on “The Rock Drivetime” radio show not long ago about a trip to Atiamuri with a young chap that went for a walk and had no TP so used Cutty Grass to wipe himself and found out why you should not do that LOL
Cutting edge stuff
First time there, 1st job had to assist digging latrines. Glock E-tool was real useful.
