Good to read your project is still on the way.
Olivier
Thanks Olivier, I have just been trying to get a happy balance between this one and the Panther G…
Will be doing the tracks again tonight to finish those off
I did the tracks, and got those on then tackled the boz plates…
Warped resin is no one’s friend…
The RH side isn’t to bad if you look quickly lol…
The plate brackets mate up with the hull ones but the length is out front and back…more so at the rear.
There is some minor touch up on some of the track areas and where the PE bolt heads and washers are on the plate brackets.
Now… The warped LH side.
Initially I thought the warp was only at the rear, but as I tried to secure the plates, it very gently warps all the way along to front and sort of lifts up at a very slight angle where the boz plates should rest against…it really is picking it’s moments to fight me lol.
I have a sort of solution to the gaps on both sides being hidden.
We did very occasionally use long rolls of a hessian which were secured to the area just under the plate mounting points and the cam loops. When we then stopped and had to cam up ( which wasn’t very often as camming up in those days on the plain was pretty pointless as a tank with a cam net draped over it stands out for miles) so we would unroll the hessian so it covered up the exposed lower wheels along the entire length of the wagon breaking up it’s shape… so I will have a go at doing that once I have the green cam on over the next few days.
I think that is the safest option with the boz plates and how they sit agains the hull and the warped side.
I will also cheat a bit on the callsign. I have been crewed on a 22 in BATUS, which is on the decal sheet that Jim kindly sent me but that was a Mk9… I just can’t bring myself to make 31 C/S numbers up for my Stillbrew one, so I will use a bit of artistic expression and put the 22 ones on… Hope no one minds
Once the green is on, I will do the detail painting on it
Hi Johnny
Looking pretty good, can’t see the warp especially, maybe if you’re looking down?
The PE bolts on the Skirt attachment plates look big to me?
The hessian rolls - like this?
Question for you - do you recall if there was bracing inside the lid of the front low square stowage bins, & the TC’s turret stowage bin?
Have picks of the other bins, but not those?
Mal
Looking good John even if it is fighting you…
Yes Mal, that is the general plan for the hessian rolls, except I will possibly do full length rolls and maybe one on the front.
I think the PE bolt size is pretty close to being ok, as the real ones are 19mm - 3/4in, if anything the washers are a bit to big.
The warp on the LH side, its is very noticeable on the rear without the boz plates fitted. Once they are fitted, it is sort of hidden but it is then more apparent on the front sections but still doesnt look that bad because your eye is naturally drawn to straight line of the long boz plates … but its there … damn warped resin lol …
Regarding the bins and the internal lid supports - I honestly cant remember, but I would say yes, they all would have internal lid supports fitted. In the image of the small bin on the rear LH corner with the tow hook in it you can clearly see the supports and this is the smallest bin on the wagon so it just makes sense that all bins will have them fitted.
It is a nice detail that yours has the option of having the lids open, gives you lots of scope for showing kit stowed for Dios etc. I guess the 1/35 PE sets may offer that with their bins ?
Thanks Colin … it may be fighting me, but I am still really enjoying it. It is nice sometimes and a bit nostalgic in that I will be doing a random bit on it and then I will think of something I did on mine 30 years ago like something we did on an exercise or in camp and just makes me chuckle thinking about it.
Thanks Johnny
Stowed kit - like this?
Mal
Yep, exactly like that. Except no rations like that in the Comd bin, that was his special bin for his kit only. When I was loader (loaders are the go to food and rations guy on the wagon) i would ready to go stuff kept at hand inside the turret, and I would have main rations in the LH front square or occasionally 2nd triangle bin On ours the LH and both rear hull small bins on the corners were the Drivers for his tools and the loader like I said had one of the front LH bins for rations, everything on the right side of hull was for the remaining turret & gunnery tools.
I love that clip
I know you do.
Brilliant work there John it really looks excellent. I can’t see the warp you refer to and it really looks straight and true. Don’t tell anyone and I’m sure they won’t notice. I can’t wait to see it with the disruptive color on and the hessian should be outstanding.
Cheers Matt. On the LH side, in between the 4 & 5th boz plate mounts is about the only straight and true bit, to the rear of that the warp bends up and down & makes the plates sit higher toward the long bin, and forward of the 4th mount it very slightly twists up and causes the slight gap you can see behind the front 2 plates… hopefully the hessian will be the saving grace
I thought I would just check the box art on the original post, and even on that you can see the boz plates do not line up correctly and there is a gap on the rear one between where it ends and the rear mudguard and the front plate sits at slightly the wrong angle … maybe it is an initial mold /dimension issue and no matter what you do it wont fit correctly … Glad I thought about looking at the box art…
So it’s not your fault John - Accurate Armor bodged it up and they were fine with it!
Really looking good John, another work of art in the making,
. As for the use of ‘netting’ to hide minor blemishes…I’m a huge proponent of that method…as well you know,
.
With regards marking…it’s your build, so, imho, it doesn’t matter a jot what others think, .
G
I honestly dont think it is an intentional bodge though Matt. I have it from a 100% reliable source that on the initial build/mock up/ casting they were designed from a series of photos only taken from that time period when there really was no internet access or online reference material available like there is nowadays to confirm exact measurements and shapes etc. So there would of been room for a bit of misinterpretation or a camera angle not showing everything etc … and for a while, these were the only kits available of Chieftains… even the Tamiya one is off the mark in a lot of ways and isnt in reality a Mk 5 at all …
Netting, pigments, washes, mud effects … they are all gifts that keep on giving … and hiding lol
If the netting doesn’t do the job, just scrath up that side really badly like it hit a wall…
Looking good!
