Best Tank that Never Was - Part 4!

Thanks Barkindigger and Petbat, and that barrel also makes it less easy to park in my finished models cabinet…

Very nice work; very nice.

Great build, Bert! Very convincing and beautiful job on the camo as alrerady pointed out.

In between a few medical distractions and the M48A2 project, I’ve managed to get a coat of paint on the mighty Dutch MBT-70; I need to apply another coat as I’ve missed a few places but progress perhaps:

The turret is just lodged on for the moment. As you will note, I use Tamiya’s XF-51 for the Gelboliv.

Very nice Brian. Looking excellent.

Thanks very much Chaps; I must say, even if so myself, it does have sort of presence doesn’t it? Not too much imagination required to envisage it on the NW German farmlands looking for T-64s!

Remember this beast from the 1990s?

Well, it exists in kit form courtesy of Amusing Hobby. Now, I’m getting ahead of myself here; I have the MBT-70 to complete - although built, and my M48A2 is coming to fruition, however, I could not resist a decent looking Black Eagle that must fit the “Best Tank that Never Was” criteria easily, so here it is:

I’m not going to show every last sprue, but here’s a couple, including a 3D printed component nicely protected in a small plastic box:

That interesting looking turret:

And a mercifully small etched brass fret:

Whilst the tracks look a bit laborious, I don’t have to worry about a top run. As I plan to depict it as per the pics, I also don’t have to worry about a crew - unusual for me - and can model it all closed down.

The only accessory I thought necessary was this set:

So, 4 months left (in which to complete the MBT-70 as well), and I might be a bit pushed. We’ll see!

I have this Black Eagle kit as well. It looks outstanding in the box. I’ve built 3 Amusing Hobby kits and they have all had excellent fit and finish. You should look forward to building this one!

I missed this one. Looking very mean and purposeful I must say.

I always liked the look of the Russian T-80 and the Black Eagle is a great choice for this campaign.

Wondering if this will be a ‘what if’ in GSFG service, or even GDR?

Oh God - don’t! It was bad enough (by that I mean “fun”) identifying what needed what on my (fairly) recent T-74 project; I don’t really wish to go down a similar route with Black Eagle - although, although…….

No; this will have to be an OOB build I think. It should still look sufficiently mad with the paint job and the camouflaged turret.

However, an NVA green one with the DDR emblem……?

I can’t recall if I posted a starting pic or not and I can’t be arsed right now to scroll back through eight months of posts, but I am going with Amusing Hobby’s Neubaufahrzeug, which I finally got a start on today:

And here is where I am stopping for the evening:

Wow that’s a lot of work for one day! It looks great.

Don’t worry about a starting pic! (I could look it up, but won’t bother as your recent pic is clearly raw plastic…)

Reminds me I need to restart my own entry!

Me too.

Okay, I have made a start to my entry. Too hot and humid here to do any airbrushing, so my other builds have stalled until better weather.

What I am building is Takom’s German VT 1-2. A cold war oddity with 2 guns. The VT 1-1 was a version with 105mm guns, but the VT 1-2 was equipped with 120mm guns - one auto loaded the other manually loaded, because they could not get the autoloader sorted as a mirror of the original.

The VT 1-2 is in Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung (WTS) in Koblenz, and I got to take a lot of detail pics when I was there a few years ago, so I will be adding missing detail as I go along…

Start pic and where I am up to:

The kit lower and Upper hulls are both a bit warped, but I am hoping when the sides are added, it will all pull into alignment.

So far fit has been good, although the instructions show the incorrect part numbers for the hydraulic 2 x 2 junction boxes to be fitted on each side. #35 is actually #36 and visa versa, same with #37 and #38 (these are the two rectangular pieces fitted close to the sponson in the first pic.

The real Beast:

And one of the junction boxes mentioned above:

For those who may have missed it, I posted a 1970s article about the VT 1-1 and 1-2 earlier in this thread.

Got this far last night by midnight. Just the main turret and tracks left and then I can start paint prep.
