Hi everyone.
I’m wondering how to protect my vignette (The Land Rover one, here for those who are curious), since I don’t have a cabinet, only a shelf where it will gather dust quickly!
So, I’m thinking of using clear acrylic sheets to build a custom case; yay or nay? Or should I just buy a larger display case where the vignette will fit? Or perhaps it’s all overkill and I only need an air duster?
What do you think? You guys have a blueprint?
François
Wouldn’t hurt if dust is a big issue for you. I actually built a custom wall-mounted cabinet with a removable acrylic front but that would be overkill for just one vignette. There are premade display cases but I don’t think any I’ve seen would be big enough for you.
At least in the short term, attach some long handled cotton swabs to the base and drape cling wrap over the whole diorama.
Gluing acrylic neatly takes some practicing (been there, done that, got the ugly box)
If I were to build a rectangular cover I would use aluminium angle stock or maybe wood slats.
Aluminium angles might be easier. Glue the sheets inside the angles and build up a box to fit over the diorama. Use acrylic for the base, the sixth side of the box, or make a wood base from plywood with wooden slats glued to the edges
The inner slat is a few mm (1/8th or 3/16ths) narrower than the outer to create a groove
for the plastic sheet.
The corners where the angle stock meets needs to be mitered in two directions
unless you can find a box-making system with prefabricated corners.
About twenty years of dust free and still going…
