Chieftain mk11 Takom

In 1993 they amalgamated to be the Queens Royal Lancers. Probably why they thought it was Household Cavalry.

Probably just not much research as our Regt badge was nothing like the 17/21/QRL / RL new badge.

I will have a look over the next few days and see if I can find any images I have of Chieftains with the Death or Glory badge on them.

Tricky one finding any good images of 17/21 wagons with the Skull on.

Also, Iā€™m not convinced they had the Mk11 in Germany. When we moved to Sennelager in late 87, 17/21 already had Cr1, so they probably bypassed having mk11s. They may have had them in Tidworth when they moved back.

I have found one image of the Skull badge on a TISH door and thatā€™s about it.

Will keep on looking through some stuff.

I found three pictures of a 17/21st chieftain crossing a River in the Netherlands in late 1983 Iā€™m going to use as a basis. (Iā€™ll start my own thread for that)

I canā€™t see any tactical markings, and where one would think there would be is white tape ā€œXā€s with the side skirts removed.

Ok, this post isnā€™t precisely on target - not a Mk 11, not green & black cam, but thought it might be of interest - How to paint a tank in Urban Camouflage. - YouTube -
amazing how much masking tape you can go through.

Oh, thanks for reviving this thread

Have just spent a pleasant half an hour looking through this thread whilst on a short break in Cornwall ā€¦ it was too wet to go to the pub earlier!

Very impressed with your results Olivier. I have two 1/35 Chieftains (one Tamiya and one Takom) in my stash at the moment and there are bound to be more in future, as this is one of my all time favourite tanks. Iā€™ve lost count of the number of Airfix 1/76 Chieftains I got through many years ago!

This will be a go to thread for me when I do build one, being a brilliant insight into building this kit, and some great ref input especially from you John @Johnnych01 and others of course.

Well done Olivier

We are staying in Falmouth. We had a couple of OK days, but its been a bit wet generally, and Mousehole was feezing yesterday!
We have an option to stay on a few days which we are considering, but also watching the weather with a keen eye. Weā€™ll see!

The Chieftain is quite an elegant tank. Not a bruiser like the American Abramsā€¦ More, like the Aston Martin of battle tanks.

Mousehole is a nice little place, they do a nice Christmas lights show all round the harbour. I use to go fishing off the rocks down there ā€¦ (many years ago) ā€¦You probably picked a good time with less tourists down so places like Penzance/Truro wont be so busy. St Michaelā€™s Mount would of been good to go and see if you catch the tide right. Falmouth is actually a deep water harbour, they sometimes have RN ships in there, Auxiliarys or the supply tenders usually. Glendurgan gardens just south is quite nice for a wander around just south of you and also Goonhilly Earth Station (satellite arrays) is interesting.

I wondered about that. Certainly looks great in the box. I have a chance to get one at less than retail, so may do that. I donā€™t think you can ever have too many Chieftains?

Iā€™ve been studying the Khalid at Bovington Tank museum over the last few months, with a view to working out how best to produce one. Khalid is furthest away in this picture. Interesting comparison between the Khalid and Challenger rear ends! If you click on the picture and go to my Flickr feed, you will see lots of detailed shots of the museumā€™s Khalid. Just search my feed using ā€œkhalidā€ as a key and you should see them all. Might help in your Khalid build also @smolensk ?

Perhaps we can see your Khalid sometime?

I used to be a vehicle commander on those monstrous carbunckles many moons ago,i do know a bit about them,i believe Accurate Armour do them in black and yellow DE07 and DE08 as l remember,i bought both sets, they are pretty decent,i need to get the oil drum set from them,it should say oep 220,omd 80 and om18 on them, gearbox, main engine and hydraulic oil respectively, they are obligatory for this kit, every panzer in the regiment had them, most fitted them to the back rear corners of the tank with old fan belts, they were sat on the jacking blocks to stop them from splitting.
I just managed to bag the takom mk 11 kit off evil bay luckily,as they are currently out of production
I hope this helps.
