Hi Tim lost the link to your build finally back, my build is on the back burner for now
Well, I’m glad you found the link again. Quite some time ago, I looked in on my old blog, and much to my surprise, the view count had gone up, even though the blog was on the old site. Quite a surprise to me! But anyway, I’ve been working on getting the upper shrouds completed, have started on the last set (starboard side main mast). I’ve run into a little trouble, as the little jig I build to get the deadeye height correct, doesn’t sit so well on the top, and my clamps only make the sitting of the jib even worse. However, I came up with an idea that I’m going to try this afternoon - and that is to use a paint jar ((with lots of paint in it) to try to weigh down the jig while I glue the shroud around the deadeye. Wish me luck!!
Well, progress is being made - what with my new work schedule, I really haven’t had time to work on Victory. But I’ve got just one more ratline/deadeye to get glued up, then I can start roving the lanyard between the upper and lower deadeyes. Another reason for the slow progress, is that I’ve been sort of paralyzed with FOFU…but I think I’m back in the saddle now, so we’ll see how it goes.
Much to my surprise, I remembered my password!
timmyp,
Nice to hear you are back at it. How about some photos.
Mark
Hey Mark. I see you have a new avatar! Does that reflect you, or were you just in an ornery mood when you selected it?
So anyway, a couple few pictures. The pics were taken after I finished lashing the shroud around the last deadeye; I think, in both the first and second pictures, the second shroud/deadeye combination (counting from the right), the lashing looks pretty ugly. I’m thinking of maybe removing as much of the old lashing as I can, and give it a do-over.
You’ll also note, that my little jig I was using to hold the deadeye in place, is not laying flat along the top of the maintop…that will probably impact the height of that particular deadeye relative to the other deadeyes, but I might be able to minimize that when I start putting in the lanyard between the upper and lower deadeyes.
This last picture, is more about the top than anything. What I want to point out, are the white spots on the top, just beyond the jig. This is where I glued the jig to the top when I was working on the middle shrouds; I couldn’t find a clamp or anything to hold the jig in place, so I went with the glue. So now, I’ll have to figure out a way to scrape/sand that excess glue, before I put another coat of paint on it to hide everything.
So I’m off to the movies later this evening (I’m going to go see “The Many Saints of Newark”, a bit of a prequel to “The Sopranos” TV series). The movie house has only 2 showings - one at 6:20 p.m., the other at 9 p.m.
Until next time!
Tim
Timmyp,
I have had that avatar for years and used it on other forums, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago I forgot to add it to this forum. I use this one because when people first meet me they think I am some kind of grinch do to my looks, but I am really a nice guy as the grinch did at the end of the story.
Your rigging work is looking good. Sorry but I don’t have a solution on removing the glue, mayby us a scapper very gently and it will pop off.
Mark
Hey Mark,
Yeah, I’ve thought about scraping the excess glue off - unfortunately, the glue residue is too small to sort of pop off, but too big to ignore. I guess I’ll use a combination of scraping & sanding to try and clear it.
Do you happen to be using a PVA type wood glue? If so you can just brush some water on it and in a minute or two it will soften enough to be gently scraped away without damaging your beautiful work.
Hey Tim,
No, I used good ol’ Testor’s cement, so I think this will be a scraping/sanding job.
On virtually all larger ship-rigged three-masters, the lower deadeyes are attached to futtock plates that reeve through the tops and serve the same purpose as the chain plates for the lower shrouds. These futtock plates have a hole in the lower end where a metal hook attached to a thimble in the upper end of the futtock shrouds attaches, with the lower end of the futtock shroud led down to the futtock stave, which is lashed to the lower shrouds, with the catharpins running between the futtock staves to pull the lower shrouds in.
There is a page on the HMS Victory - Road to a Model website where the page author is creating a virtual Victory model with the goal of releasing a book with clear renderings of all the rigging for other modelers; he has a sample page showing the Victory’s foretop that, if you open the image in a new window and zoom it, shows the details of the foretop deadeye futtock plates, the futtock shrouds, their attachment to the futtock stave and the lower shrouds, and the catharpins.
Thanks for the links & explanation (which took me a couple of readings to follow along!) In Longridge’s book, I do believe he talks about how the futtock shrouds are attached. Unfortunately, the deadeyes don’t have a futtock plate, and I think, even at this scale, trying to get hooks manufactured and installed would be nearly impossible. I’m not sure I’ll install the catharpins, as there may not be enough room to get my big ugly hands!
Thanks again for the comments & links!
And just to update things: I’ve completed the foretop deadeyes, as well as the starboard side of the maintop. Currently working on the port side of the maintop deadeyes.
Looks like I will be pulling out my book on sailing ship rigging to attempt to figure out what the heck the both of you just said…LOL.
Mark
Well, don’t worry yourself Mark. That explanation was just an enhanced version of “insert tab B into slot C, while folding partition D to the left”.
Tim,
I can’t tell . . . did you rig your cannons?
Thanks!
Bill
No, I didn’t. Heller didn’t add any extra eyebolts to affix to the gunwales to rig the cannons, so I just let it go.
And thanks for looking at the blog!
Tim
Thanks!
Bill
Well, hooray for me! I finally got the last of the maintop deadeyes rigged! And the most bestest part, on the last 2 sets of deadeyes, I didn’t have any “leftover” lanyard thread to cut off, the thread got glued down nice and tight.
And to think the only reason I did the deadeye rigging now, was so that I could tie off the buntline rigging in the maintop shrouds. So once I get that finished, it’s back to adding all the staysails.
Well, I still haven’t finished that buntline rigging, mostly because I’m in a rush to get to the staysails. In looking over the plans, and counting the sails I got from HisModel, there’s a bit of a mis-match. Heller’s instructions show only 5 staysails (3 over the bowsprit, and 1 each between the fore and main masts, and the main mast and mizzen mast); I received a total of 8 sails from HisModel. So I got to thinking, “what to do? what to do?”, when the easy solution hit me: use only 5 staysails as per Heller’s plan, as the bowsprit and masts are rigged to accept only 5 staysails.
So in the meanwhile, I prepared some blocks for attachment to the stays, which will be the block for the halyards on the staysails. We’ll have to wait and see how things turn out.
Cheers!
It is not at all unusual to not have every sail bent on at a given time so that sounds fine to me.
Danie,
Good point! Thanks.
