Convoy! pt3

Group Build Title: Convoy! pt3

Group Build Leader(s): @barkingdigger

Group Build Description: This is a sequel to the past two “Convoy!” builds, and any kit started or proposed for the previous ones can be carried on to completion here for an award! From the previous blurb:

This campaign is aimed at anything truck-like, essentially anything bigger than a Jeep but smaller than a Liberty Ship that moves cargo (and other stuff) from A to B with wheels. We’re talking Beeps, Deuces, Blitzes, Kenworths, Macs, Volvos, and any other rig that was originally designed on a chassis to haul stuff, even if your variant left the factory kitted out for something more specialized. Fire truck? Great! Recovery truck? Sure! DUKW in WW2 glory? Why not? Or a DUKW-tours modern conversion? Super! And if you’re into civvie trucks that’s great - I have a soft spot for the old AMT 1:25 rigs. And how about the classic Aussie outback Road Train? If you’d rather convert a tanker to the Mad Max 2 rolling pillbox that’d be fine too! My aim is to be as inclusive as possible, so we can all have fun building what we enjoy. Let’s say any scale, any country, any type, military or civilian or both!

And since the more ambitious builds often stall and take time, I’m open to existing part-builds (say not much more than 50-60% complete?) that get finished up for our deadline. (My own builds can stall for months or years…) You’ll need to post a “start” pic, and some “in-progress” pics along the way - preferably with stories and comments about the build.

Completion Award: [add info about possible award badge here - see help threads for more info]

A Note about Awards: The following text is a reminder that in order for people participating and finishing their projects to receive a badge on their forum profile, they will need to provide their account username to the group build leader by the completion date of the build. The leader will then provide this list to the site admin who will bulk award the badges to those users who have finished the group build. If you don’t provide your username or finish the project on the timetable the leader has setup you will not be able to receive an award.

Hi gang, running a bit late, but here’s the thread for the upcoming Convoy! pt 3 campaign - be sure to click “Going”!

Hey Tom, how about this one?

I will roll my stalled Canadian Military Pattern truck from Convoy 3 into this one. I spent the last month poking at it but did not make much progress, mostly because of the stupid Peerless Max model I chained to it. :face_with_diagonal_mouth: That was a really dumb move.

I already have several trucks I can choose from, but I just got this in the mail yesterday:

Hi Mike, that looks great! My only concern is the collector resale value of that old MPC kit in mint condition…

I think that’s the Round2 repop.

I’m in. I’ll need to nail it down to what I’ll build but I’m thinking:
Gecko LARC (I have wanted to do an Aussie one for a while)
Gecko MWD
Riich Skoda RSO Radschlepper OST
AFV Club Beep
Mirror Models CMP or Ford 15A
IBG Bedford

or, if it is not just wheels only vehicles:
Bronco SWS Cargo carrier
AFV Club M548

Well I need to finish the Merc tractor unit and trailer I started for Convoy 2 plus I’ll look for something Cold War Western/NATO possibly a Unimog

Round2 as brek mentioned. Nah, none of my models are for collector’s purposes - hope to build each one, one of these days.

That’s my vote Peter. I have one with several “bells and whistles” and would love to see one being built.

Interested for this one.

I think about 2 kits:

M1078 or Mungo ESK

In that case warm up the rattle can of Candy Apple Red! Can’t wait to see it built.

Breaker! Breaker! Calling all Truckers! I was distracted and missed the start date of 1 July, so please accept this belated call to get 'em rolling, good buddies…

I’ve given the Chevy a start. The engine assembly, though it won’t be seen too much, is started. I’ve also assembled the “wedge” back end.

A bit of Bondo Glazing and Spot putty along the edge seams, once sanded, will clean up/cover the mediocre fit.

There’s a door on each side of the wedge that I’ve glued shut. I’m not sure I’ll be using any of the “tool accessories” provided - they lack basic detail. I may get one of those better quality “auto shop” sets and pilfer some bits for this build.

Undercarriage is mostly done. Engine is done minus attaching the exhaust and air cleaner. Cab is primed and should be able to prime the wedge today. I’m awaiting some candy red and the metallic base.

I’ve installed the motor/transmission, and the wheels are currently dry fit.

Cab was placed to determine which nose/bumper combo I wanted to use.

Pretty much all parts are now primed. The metal flake base and Candy Red (Zero Paints) has arrived. I’m hoping that today or tomorrow I can do a test shoot on the hood (metal flake - candy - gloss clear (a brand suggested many moons ago by another modeler). Or, I’ll go ahead and order Zero Paints’ two-part offering(?).

I have a feeling that the only accessories I’ll to the interior of the wedge will be the jack, fuel can, toolbox and fire extinguisher - none of the other bits would make sense (a decently made bench vice that has no place to mount it.

First time doing a candy paint. The company I bought the paints from were out of the “fine” metal flake base, so I got the extra fine. Hindsight - maybe should have waited(?).

I only have a few auto models remaining, but I’ll for sure do a candy again.

We’re having our ducts cleaned, so no more work until later (I want to get the interior of the cab, the hood and the wedge done with the initial candy coat.

Looking good to me!

I thought I was done with the initial candy painting, then realized for forgot to paint the cab interior and the front-end parts (and a couple of smaller bits). :face_with_peeking_eye:

Zero paints dry matt. Tomorrow I’ll see about finishing the rest of red and try out a rattle-can of clear that was mentioned to me some time ago.

I would like to paint the wedge’s ramps aluminum, but I’m not sure how well they can be masked around with all the little ridges. I’ll give it a shot before too long. The decals will break up all the red, but I think aluminum ramps will add some more “difference” to it.
