Anything that restricts main gun traverse is a bad idea on patrol - I vote no junk. Pile it on fenders and glacis, or hang it on the basket instead.
Looks like no junk in the trunk then as I want to do a nice base for this model in a road patrol, convoy escort setting. Thanks all!
The Model B is in primer and I got a start on the Takom tracks, planning to use them on the Magach. They go together fairly nicely, but I’m three hours into them and have 53 links assembled. Whew.

Really like that stowage … looks very realistic as per the images
Wow! That Model B really looks loaded now that everything is one color. Good luck with those tracks!
The primer pebbled pretty bad, my fault entirely, so after going over the bad areas with a worn-out Scotchbrite pad I put some Vallejo US OD on, from the rattle can. That was followed with a wash of Vallejo olive green, then I blocked in the major other colors and sealed it with clear flat.

I’m poring over pics of tanks with sandbags added now to get a feel for their color. Unfortunately the few color pics I have don’t really show them well so I’ll probably go for a raw burlap look. That’s why they’re brown now.
Our Hessian ones lose their colour and fade pretty quick when they are full and just left out in the elements for prolonged periods … It’s looking super good though Russ
Working on the sandbags, doing some other detail painting. It’s coming along but will never grace a contest table, that’s for sure.

I think you are selling yourself a bit short there Russ. Its looking great … and the sand bag colour variations and shading/shadows are really good … nothing wrong with those or the build itself
Russ if it comes out like any of your other builds, it deserves to be on a contest table.
I appreciate it guys, but what doesn’t show in the pics is how pebbled a lot of the paint still is. I will dirty it up a lot in an attempt to hide it, but it’s very obvious in a lot of places that I can’t cover up. No worries though, it’ll still look the part.
I’m still at it, but I hate painting and get really slow when that’s all there is to do.

Doing my best not to get sidetracked, but I confess to having another M48 hull in progress.
Double the fun
Mr. Baer:
This is very nice work. I’ve been kind of stealth-following this thread, and it is fun to watch your work come together. In the picture above with the base-coat on, I was struck by your work on the gun mantlet cover on the Israeli tank: even the little cover for the gunner’s telescope hanging down under the aperture. Very nice.
One thing regarding the markings on the Vietnam-era M48A3 . . . normally, the tank number (“C-29”) would be on the other side (the LEFT side of the tank, viewed as if sitting in the driver’s compartment), and the unit designation on the right — so, again, normally, the vehicle bumper numbers would be switched the other way ‘round.
Also, the unit marking seems to me to be . . . suspicious. 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry was definitely NOT a squadron from an armored cavalry regiment, so the use of “3/4 ACR” strikes me as incorrect. I would expect to see that rendered as “3/4 CAV” instead (with the caps as written). I imagine that the decals you used were designed that way, and so . . .
OK, that is all. Again, very nice work on both of these tanks. And thanks for this on-going blog; it is fun to see this all come together.
Mark
Thanks Mark. The mantlet cover on the IDF tank is from DEF Model, part of their Magach 3 conversion. As to the markings on the Model B, I copied a picture, which I’m guessing shows improvised markings due to the sandbags laid all over the glacis. Other than that, I plead ignorance.
Mr. Baer:
Well, there you go! That is why photographic evidence always trumps everything . . .
I think this is great work here, and again, thanks for letting us share in this process. It will be fun to see these finished.
Mark
Both models look great. I have always enjoyed your scratch detailing and work in progress pictures.
Cheers,
Ralph
Continued outstanding results Russ, I see that 3rd hull hiding in the background!
Tee hee hee, says the snickering mad scientist… I promised myself the other day to build one of my newer kits, as out of the box as possible, but then I looked at the two Tamiya AMX-13 kits in the stash and the Heller AMX 13 VCI that I bought for the upper hull and got that urge again. Do I need a reality check? Intervention?
I’m afraid you have AMS Russ…there is no cure.
