Hi Everyone,
So… not 100% sure what happened with both our recent outages, but I believe we may have been running perilously low on hard drive space. Sort of wish I got automated alerts to this fact, but I don’t so I missed it. Anyway long story short I have worked on this issue for several hours today and we are on a new instance with twice the memory, twice the SSD drive space, and twice as many cores. And it costs twice as much. Bad news is we lost all of Fridays posts and some of Thursdays most likely. The backup that was done Friday was corrupted so it wasn’t useable.
While I was doing the transition to a new instance I also updated our OS (Ubuntu) to a newer version and also updated the Discourse to current as well. Hope you enjoy the new speed and performance.
So the bad news includes that it costs twice as much – little chance of the Collective posting half their normal images to make the new space last twice as long. More donors & patrons would help more guys – I recently started donating (incognito) after freeloading for way, way too long. Interesting that the two previous posters are Patrons – those interested enough to read this thread but who’ve never contributed (especially if long-standing members) - well what better time to do the right thing?
That link doesn’t seem to work, I get a page not found error. There is a “Want to help?” menu in the banner at the top of the site though which does work.
I was wondering why I had to sign in again today! (Normally the auto-saved details mean the site opens with me already logged in…)
On the storage front, is everybody reducing their image sizes BEFORE uploading? I know the software reduces them for distribution, but are the “full-fat” originals still lurking and taking up space on the server?
Good Morn’in y’all, glad to see the site is up and running again thanks Jim @staff_Jim for grinding through the crash and the subsequent upgrades. Talk about being a luddite . . .
. . if that is comparable to “computer illiterate dumbass” then I fit the build, only took me a half hour and a cup of coffee to register as a patron but I’m a card carrying member now. (Interesting technique to recruit new donors LOL, sorry it took so long to pitch in).
Thanks for bringing our beloved forum back to life, Jim!
Noticed yesterday morning during a work break that I only can reach the start page but nothing else and was worrying if we’ve been hacked. Glad to see, we’re all back again!
I’m no patron but I donate some money from time to time, as I’m a long time user of this forum - exactly 14 years this month - and benefit a lot from it. That’s easier for me
I had a post in Model Shipwrights about my Monogram UDT Boat disappear for some reason. There were several comments and responses and it’s all gone. What happened? Was it removed for some reason?
You can just send Jim some cash in the mail and that will work. I figure the value I get from this site is worth the value of a couple of kits. Jim I sent you my latest cash update earlier this week.
Think about it. What is the value of this site worth to you?
I just tried to become a Patron and the Visa Secure keeps bouncing my Visa card. I double checked all the numbers and everything’s correct. There’s lots of room on the card. I’ll try again later.
I’ve been enjoying this site for over 20 years, no reason not to support it if it needs funding.
