Nicely done John. Looks used but not abused. Great effects.
Thanks Matt. The exhaust needed to be done at this stage as once the cab goes on it would be more difficult to paint up and a fair bit is still visible on the underside on the real deal.
Now onto a bit that has really p***ed me off. HobbyBoss idiots have failed to include the SCAMMELL logo for the grill. Now somethings I can turn a blind eye to and somethings may be missed in the research etc … but come on … this a massively prominent … it is clearly seen on every single front end shot of Commanders. Really annoyed, so now I have to try and sort out 2mm letters from somewhere, just for 8 letters !!!
If they are around 2mm, then that is what I am looking for. Who does those ?
No idea; I can’t remember - I got them ages ago from the model railway manufacturers; what I mean is I’m offering them up. Send me your grid by PM and I’ll get them in the post tomorrow. If they’re no good you can always drop them back to me at a model show.
Thats very helpful and generous mate, much appreciated. PM inbound. As I am only after the 8 letters, I can bring the remainder back up in April and hand them back at Swindon Brian.
Those letters are by Slaters, a staple of the UK model railway fraternity. I bet they left the name off to avoid paying royalties to the brand owner…
Did some more details added to the rear.
Also added all the PE tie downs around the lip of the roof.
After I glued the rear facing spotlight mounts ( there are no spotlights included so I’m scratching those and the cables, but only going to do one side fitted. ) I realised the actual mounts were to long and stuck out to much, so I removed them, and trimmed off about 2.5mm so they sit a bit better.
And added the cables to this … I think it’s something to do with the cab tilt, but not 100% sure.
And without the missing Scammell logo …
And thanks to Brian @BootsDMS , with a logo fitted.
Now, for the spotters out there, the logo plate is a bit short on each end. It should cover 2 more grill squares either end, but I am very happy how it turned out, considering there wasn’t one supplied… And again, a big thanks to Brian for the letters.
Great work there John. Yes, typical HB… don’t add the details “no-one will notice”!
@BootsDMS Brian - Very generous of you. Great example of what this community of modellers is all about - helping each other out.
I hadn’t really thought about it much Peter, but you’re right; there’ s always been a lot of assistance on this site, culminating I suppose in the production of some 3D-printed M48/M103 fuel drums and rack offered by Fabian Nevarez; I mean, wow!
Now that I have thought about it, I take great comfort in that I feel we live in really good times regarding the hobby, and am also thankful, as you identify, for the good nature (of most) who post on here.
Well said Brian
Dragon Sd.Kfz 252 is almost done inside except for the shells and the instrument panel. Then I can close the hull and work on the exterior.
Trailer is in primer; no pic as it is out in the garage work area curing with some other bits and bobs.
I am going to go with a gray scheme and do an early Stug (I have a C/D, E, and early F/8 on hand) and arrange them on their individual bases in such a way that side-by-side they will blend to create a larger diorama, splitting the Dragon Stug reloading crew set between them.
That logo looks fantastic! It makes the front end.
Kudos to Brian @BootsDMS for being a generous stand-up guy and having John’s back. This truly is a gracious community.
Nice detail added. Clearly visible and very well made.
Fortunatly side markings are present so you don’t have to make them too
Which again is really odd, as they are just as obvious as the front logo, yet they missed that completely ?? weird - and thanks for checking it out …
The reason is probably the one given by Barkingdigger.
Wont be anything to do with that, the Scammell logo is plastered all over the box, sprues, decals and instructions, plus they went out of business years ago so they wouldnt be paying anyone, also, they include 2 PE Crane Fruehauf plates for the trailer so the same would apply to that. They just forgot it.
Scammell was part of the Leyland Group from 1955. The name is actually still owned by the Dutch company DAF who bought Leyland. The rights to the name ‘Commander’ (and other Scammell vehicle names) were sold to Unipower Ltd.

This is just ‘typical Horror Boss’. I have yet to build one of their kits that does not have glaring omissions of one form or another.
I have previously posted what I had to scratch build on their their Dana. Their SdKfz 254 (Saurer RR-7) was missing the whole rear subframe parts and what was there was badly proportioned:
Their M706 has a lot of missing interior, as well has significant shape issues.
Little progress,
A bit of wiring, and a silver decal sheet from Revell for the speedometer
Interesting close-up pictures of the quad here:
