Kenworth 963 Super 1/24 scale

If the metal mesh is welded in all the way around it would be plenty strong.
If it is just tacked in place with spot welds in the corners and maybe
top and bottom by the vertical in the middle it would be rather weak.

The sun shines from “our” side and lights up the short side of the box facing us (or the camera)
The rear (long) side is darker (in shadow).
This means that the inside of the other short side (passenger side) should be lit up if the box
was made of flat strips. If the box frame is made of L-bars then the top inside of the far side
would be dark. Now look at the picture again.

It seems like those roof racks come in at least two different designs, one wider and one narrower

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say the roof racks aren’t there to carry anything, just a super-heavy-duty light bar :thinking: :grin:

Why would you put anything in somthing that’s 20 feet off the ground and bloody hard to get to? These things have plenty of ground-level access points. I can’t see anything in the racks in any photo of a 963 I can find either.

and they are too small to act as “sun screen” for the cab roof …

@Uncle-Heavy , yes, those are nice! Both are 953s, the white one is going off to a museum somewhere in the UAE. Don’t know about the red one, but it has been freshened up!

I went back to my prototype images - to find out if I really spaced out on this, but feel ok:

Four of the examples shown have the mesh base, and the fifth, in the center has a sheet metal base which I used; they look like light framing to me. It seems unlikely they are intended for very heavy loads tho.

I added the vertical tieback members, from the roof rack to the winch rack on my model - after all this, I’d feel terrible without them! :smile:

Hi D - can you imagine the cost of a fleet like that?? wow - and, to your point, they all have the racks in place, but I still haven’t seen one holding anything?? I still wonder why they are there? As you point out out they are hardly easy or convenient to reach - - hmmm, maybe I’ll add a row of rally car lights!!

Unless there’s some other obvious place to store them, how about for a bunch of snow-chains? This monster seems to have been designed for all conditions incl. sand & snow. The fact that so many images have the rack empty might indicate those examples were operating in more “normal” conditions not requiring chains (?) :thinking:

Chains big enough to fit those tyres/tires would be quite heavy …

Right, back to updates we go. The fuel tanks on this truck are big - and oddly shaped, at 1/24 scale, they are 4" long. I scaled a line drawing and built them:

Because this is big, and styrene sheet doesn’t like long runs, unsupported runs, I built the base and sides, then added several stiffener, and now we have these beauties:

Yeah - not subtle at all. They also have a cage of sorts, which is located a few inches above the tank. I pondered doing this for a while, and settled with brass square tube, because I could make them using single lengths, which were cut and then bent at angle locations. This took some head scratching to work out.

While I was at it, there is a folding step, above the tank, on the driver’s side:

This was another odd fixture. Two square tubes project out from the frame rail, below the winch. The step, which is on a pivot is located on the outward side. While it could tilt when I built it, I eventually glued it in place - I chose to show it tilted upward because I like seeing the mesh. Beyond what it looks like, I figured that if left operable, I’d eventually break it off.

Finally, there is a small deck between the winch and the bed:

As you can see, there is mesh over the frame rails, and well, I guessed on the non-skid surface on either side.

Hello model builders,

I’ve made some steady progress since the last post - real work has stayed slow, so plenty of time for model building :thinking: :smiley: more fun, but no pay…perfect…

So, on we go - the hood:

I posted some thoughts on this in the “What did you build today?” section, so won’t go on and on - that said, I’m glad this worked out - it was a real challenge to get to work right.

Next up was the bed - much more clunky than the hood, but quite a challenge:

All of this was interesting - the rear, well, it has a bed roller, with a subframe of seven small rollers - the deck has openings in the front for wood decking. And the connectors, really unique, including something that looks a lot like some sort of air ride set up.

Feeling compelled to do the opposite, something small and tedious, the linkages for the winch clutches:

Despite the big picture, these are small, and were quite frustrating to pull together.

And finally, tonight, while listening to the Niners in the playoff game - what a thriller! I decide to build a cargo box:

So, I don’t enjoy building boxes like this, and decided it would be a neat idea to build the outer walls using a continuous sheet of thin copper sheet, then filling the interior with styrene - nope, probably won’t do that again - looks pretty cool though.

And now, this is on hold, as I ran out of material, so will start again when it arrives -

HI guys, thanks for the nice words - they are appreciated! especially as I wonder, “why, exactly, am I building these tiny weird part likely not to be seen again??” :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@Johnnych01 well John, I got to thinking about your comment about making a big dio to go with this - nope, a guy is not going to do that! But, I wondered about making a load for this, as I am out of the materials I need to finish this monster. So, I went through my pictures to see what these trucks actually haul - and found some examples:

And it turns out, whether on the frigid plains of Alberta, or sunny sands of Saudi Arabia, they haul some pretty big stuff, and ubiquitous among these are big, square, horizontal tanks. As I know nothing at all about the oil extraction process, be it shale or “normal” oil, I have not idea what these are used for - yes, I realize they hold fluids, but the number of variations on these tanks is remarkable - some appear to just be big boxes, and others tanks subdivided to include other spaces - including decks and what I am assuming to be equipment rooms - maybe pumps?

As it turns out, I’ve built a few dios, and along the way have accumulated a variety of supplies for them, including stiff carboard and basswood strips. So, I decided to make a box for this model truck:

Et voila! a box! And because a box alone seemed a bit boring to make, I opted for one with a flight of stairs and a deck. I found several photos of these - what they do? who knows??

So, into my junk box I searched, and on went a variety of convincing, industrial-looking, left over parts and pieces of etch. In retrospect, I realize this is likely the most gracious flight of stairs ever used for an industrial application, but that’s the way it is!

I did what amounted to a fruitless search for what exactly goes on atop these boxes - and concluded that it doesn’t matter for this project - so cobbled together something that I could imagine seeing - right or wrong!

Aside from being big and unwieldy, this went together reasonably smoothly. I made sure to cut the cardboard panels square, and installed an internal frame of basswood keeping it from deforming. The base is basswood sheet, with big styrene I-beams running the full length. I paid attention to how these work in real life. As it turns out, there is a big tube used on the lift end, which wire rope is wrapped around and back into itself as the lift point. What’s hard to see in these pictures is that I have included a variety of slightly overlapping and formed parts (i beams, channels etc), which when I take final pictures, will cast some nice shadows - or, so I hope!

I’ll run by the art store and see if I can find a can or two of acrylic spray paint for this and paint it up.
