Message or ā€˜@’ me when you start the build. I don’t want to miss it. I know my, mixed up model builder brain’s attention span, will miss the first 80 posts before finally finding it.

I understand, I find a few of those builds once in a while.

Very nice Si, am sorely tempted by Black cat’s Bathurst class HMS Castlemaine as we’re very luck to have her beautifully preserved as a museum ship here in Melbourne

Wow Rory!

Magnificent addition to the stash! Very Fire seem to have been in a race with Border Models who surprisingly have announced the very same ship in this market segment…

Well, nothing like a bit of healthy competition hey

Now there’s multiple Bismarck’s, Missouri’s, Yamatos, Montana’s the list goes on and now Takao and modellers wallets across the world will never be the same

Looking forward to seeing the blog pop up soon

I have created a post for the build.

Hi Russ, That temptation I understand, to have the real thing to go see I don’t think I could resist the temptation.

Cheers, :clinking_beer_mugs: Si

My LHS has had a few things from a stash reduction. Most had gone by the time I got it today, just a few old Airfix kits. Not much that took my fancy, but I did treat myself to this still factory sealed HMS Leander.

I remember it being one of the better Royal Navy Cold War ships they did.

You’re not wrong; as originally issued the only glaring error was the deck colour, it looks as if they haven’t corrected the box art, even though they’ve replaced the turret with Exocets and while there were several kinds of conversion made later in the life of the class, I don’t think any looked like that…

Cheers,

M

Yes, I recall some very weedy looking Exocet launchers being included in the Falklands anniversary set from the early 2000’s. I did wonder when they made an appearance, so it looks like it was around the time of this boxing (1992). I don’t know whatever happened to that set, it did a disappearing act when I moved out. Probably in a box in the loft.

I did a bit of googling earlier and they did get a lot of refits and different systems over the years. Additional SeaCats, Exocets, Ikara, SeaWolf, torpedos, towed sonar arrays and swapping the Wasps for Lynx! A hard working class of ship.
I’ll probably just build it as is in its original fit. I don’t have the references to do a conversion for a later ship, although I probably have got the necessary bits from Dragon RN accessory sprues.

I thought Dragon was 1:700th while Airfix stuck with the good old Imperial one inch represents 50ft… On the other hand Dragons own 1:700th Type 21 Frigate is apparently 1:600th scale but with 1:700th details (they may have measured the Airfix kit but forgot to recalculate the numbers…). Given the very few parts used from the Dragon weapons sprue, you could substitute the equivalent parts from the Airfix Type 21 and have a very nice 1:600th model!

Cheers,

M

Dragon seems to have messed up the scaling a lot on their range. I need to dig out that sprue, but I do remember everything looked a bit on the big side for 1/700. It’s just a thought anyway as I will be doing this one oob rather than messing about swapping stuff.

The County though, that does need a lot of improvement. Good news is though that I found the 3D printed update set, so I’ll probably get one ordered for it after next payday.

Stephen, you may want to give Atlantic models a look as he does a PE set for the Airfix Leander.

Cool, that’s the site I found that County set. I must have a good look to see what else they have. I will admit to having a phobia of PE, especially the tiny fiddly stuff for ships. It just never works out for me.
Are these the people who bought White Ensign Models, a lot of it looks a bit familiar?

No, Atlantic Models is Peter Hall (Mad Pete), who is the person that did the PE and some (or all) of the resin kits for White Ensign. As well as his own shop he is working with Toms Modelworks to add more sets to the ā€˜old’ White Ensign range. Sure miss White Ensign

The shop doesn’t work like most, you have to send him an email listing what you want along with your address and he replies with the cost including postage and a Paypal payment request.

Ah, that’s why it looked so familiar.
I think Mad is a good nickname for him. I bought a couple of radar sets in the past from WEM and they were the most fiddly thing I’ve tried putting together.
