Regarding China, beyond the Taiwan area, they do not have much force projection capability. Not to mention that their navy has zero institutional memory of combat. All that they can base their doctrine on is theories and exercises. Lastly folks seem to forget that the USN has a fairly capable submarine force that could do as much damage, if not more, in sea lane interdiction than those destroyers or cruisers mentioned. The USN has very good institutional memory on submarine warfare and sea lane interdiction.

Or maybe they know, like every rational person, that war is futile and achieves little material gain. they have a lot to lose economically, but then I suspect, so do the country’s reliant on their output, more so i’d wager.
So, what they are doing is engaging in land-grabs by other means, whilst happy to use their forces for defensive means until some mug attempts to take them on.

Yes, they learned a lot from what was a bit of a debacle for them. But the first Gulf War was, in terms of learning, the real eye opener for them.

Yes they had a decent lot of kit sold to the Iraqis- they’d also been paying attention to how it was used in the Iran-Iraq War too- Iran was using some of their tanks at the time and the Iraqis had a few captured but the Gulf saw a fair amount of their kit in use. However, the eye opener wasn’t so much their own kit but the Western forces kit used by the Allied powers- that really shocked them into a wholescale re-evaluation of their doctrine and their equipment.
