My M60A3 TTS “Frankentank” build

Thanks Ken. That clears things up for me.

As promised. Redid the turret a bit.

Added the ARD decal to the tank sight and replaced the regular rangefinder with the covered laser rangefinder.

I wish I had seen this thread before!
Great references. And build!
I like the Frankentank! Has a bit of the same feel as my “Magach”.

Thanks for clearing that up. I forgot about the black inner shape. Death before Dismount!

Nicely done!! How did you lower the backend of the hull? I built the old 1970s Tamiya M60A1 kit when I was stationed in Germany back in the early 1980s. The backend of that kit was Maleah’s an eyesore to me. I have the late 1980s Tamiya M60A3 kit, but it looks like the same hull to me.

The M60A1 and M60A3 has a special place in my heart! I served on M1s, but I never “connected” with it like I did with the M60s… I guess it’s the “first love” or the “first car” thing!

This is a great project. Fantastic model.

Started applying the decals to the hull. Got these from the AFV Club M60A3 TTS kit, since they match the reference pics i have.

Still need the side and rear decals, plus giving some metal wear to the tracks.

Looking good. The MERDC came out nicely.

Thanks. All Tamiya Acrylics. Base TS-5 Olive Drab spray, XF-52 Flat Earth, XF-57 Buff and XF-1 Flat Black all done by hand.

I have to try this combo on a M151 I have sitting around.
But isn’t XF-52 Flat earth instead of dark? Or old vs. new batch/name?
Oh… and another question; isn’t khaki too dark for the 4th colour?

Actually. It’s XF52 Flat Earth and XF57 Buff. I had to paint the rear engine deck in order to apply the last decals.

Reynier, are those inaccurate Tamiya or Academy rubber tracks? I plan to CAD and 3D print T142 tracks in 1/35 also so if you want, I can donate some initial prints to you (trial run) as an appreciation for helping me out last time. Just cover the $5 for postage.

I know the Army standard MERDC had the sand, but I recall some stationed in USAREUR saying that they did not use sand on the pattern?

Looks good though, I am inspired to resurrect my A1 project.

I’ll cover the $5 for shipping and yes, these are the Tamiya Rubberband tracks that came off the Marine ERA M60 I did earlier. I used AFV Club tracks on that one.

Some units used the full 4-color MERDC pattern, while some skipped the buff color. It eventually evoked into the 3-color NATO scheme of medium green, brown and black.

Sounds good. Please give me 2 weeks to CAD and 3D print them.

Good work here . Camo looks good .

We did that in my unit, 3rd BN 8th Cav. in the late 80s. When new vehicles started coming in with the 3 color NATO, existing vehicles had the sand/buff painted out and the black areas enlarged to mimic the NATO scheme, but it was done using the enamel paint used for the MERDC pattern.

I scrolled thru here, but may have missed it. Is there a link to the/a list of tweaks for the Tamiya M60. I got one in a trade, mainly want to fix basic things and do a paint project, not looking for the full AM campaign.
