My wife hates the hobby

Good point

As do I. My wife works far more than I do. I won’t take a gig on unless it meets a certain amount - so more time for other things. It’s only fair that I should shop and cook. Plus I enjoy it.

I think it all goes to choices you make. Good choices we are happy bad choices you are sad. Times gone by I was single and interested. I knew this guys sister and asked her out. I was headed to Orlando to Disney and asked if she wanted to go to Disney for the weekend, (about 2 hours away). My oh my that turned bad fast. In 10 seconds it got into a discussion of how men just want to get into women’s pants and the only reason guys want to take girls to the beach is to see them in a swim suit. She should have known she was pretty safe because her brother would stand up for me as being OK to be with but ouch. I didn’t bother to ask again. I just asked girls out that I thought I would like to be with. Anything goofy such as that crazy idea of prepaying for a date would have been a good bye. Hummm I wonder if you paid for a predate, what would you get for a post date? Might have been a great question to ask. The girl I married had a masters degree but no job and I had a low paying job and an associates degree. We both had nothing to speak of. We were on equal footing so the expectations were we could make a future together. Neither one relied on the other, we both contributed. If I was wealthy or extremely handsome someone might fall in want for me other than love. That would be a rocky relationship if the money went away or the handsome faded. I married her 3 days before leaving for Desert Storm. She had gotten a sh!tty job that paid just above minimum wage while looking for a better job in her field. I had bought a small house on the edge of campus for $25 K. The monthly payment was the same as the apartment I had been renting $225 a month. I refinished the hard wood floors myself at night, repainted the inside, built a small laundry room and she moved in. We struggled along for 10 years before earnings were enough that we could put money away. We have done OK. The thing that made it work is that we believed in each other and knew we would not let each other down. My wife is honest to a fault. If selling something she will point out every flaw because she doesn’t want you to think she is cheating you. We do have differences of opinions and argue from time to time but we both know we have each others back. As far as modeling goes, she is OK with it, just wants me to get rid of the stash. How can you model without a 'stash?

My wife’s hobby is investing money. Which is why she’ll be retiring next year with a full retirement at the young age of 53.
We discussed it today - buying 20 more shares or RTX when it drops to $165, which it will. I’ve posted some excellent tips before - I don’t think this one is any different.

One etymology is a 17ᵗʰ Century English antipathy toward the Dutch, portraying anything Dutch as cheap; another is a 19ᵗʰ Century reference to the Pennsylvania Dutch, who avoid letting themselves acquire debt, and so would prefer to pay their own way.

@18bravo , Yes, the key is KEEPING the money and not reinvesting it . Some investors take profit and then buy more stock which goes down in price, or spend that money right away and then they don’t have money leftover to pay the Capital Gains taxes come April 15th. Capital Gains tax can be a lot from 0-20% of the sold stock profit.

Playing the Stock Market is just that…“playing with money” which can be invested foolishly or wisely because one can’t really predict if the stock is going to rise or fall or ever recover from “the Red (loss of value) into the Black (regained value and rising into profit).”

in some ways you can:

Traditional portfolio theory demands hyper-diversification because it assumes you cannot predict the future. However, my concentrated “strategery” succeeds by focusing on a few distinct operational advantages:

High Barriers to Entry: A software company can be disrupted overnight by a new startup. A company like General Dynamics or RTX cannot. You cannot build a nuclear submarine shipyard or a missile integration plant in a garage. These companies have a virtual monopoly on defense infrastructure.

Sovereign-Backed Backlogs: My portfolio does not rely on fickle consumer spending. Their revenue is contractually guaranteed by the U.S. government and its G7 allies, making them some of the most recession-proof businesses on earth.

And a few others.

(Like ABSOLUTELY reinvesting it, which almost all of our stocks do automatically. I think the reason BAE does not has something to do with its location. So we have to take about ten seconds to roll the dividends over manually. No biggie.)

Is that the same Aurora who made the range of somewhat anime WW2 German Women’s Auxillary figures?

I’m assuming so; the range is extensive and I’ve used one of their figures before to convert into a Brit female soldier:

They don’t seem to be especially Anime in features, just well moulded 1/32 and 1/35; they are made of a ferociously tough white metal. The range is actually quite good, and whilst Waffen SS tank crews might be a bit off, the Auxiliaries are well shown, and even include the dead and wounded.

I have been modelling since before I met my wife. When we were living in a condo she wasn’t the biggest fan due to the fumes from painting and gluing in a confined space. But overall she has been generally supportive. She comes to shows with me and acts like a soccer mom cheering me on if/when I take a medal.

She is much happier when I am at home building models vs when I am in the field or travelling for shooting events.

I’ve known women like that. But it didn’t bother them in the least to put on and take off nail polish in the bathroom.
My daughter goes outside to do it. My wife doesn’t even wear it most of the time.

That’s him. I don’t think I ever actually had his email address although we used to PM quite a bit on the old site. He created a large diorama of Commodore Perry in Tokyo bay in 1853 that was spectacular. (This looks familiar: Retracing Commodore Perry’s footprint in Yokosuka, Japan | Stripes Japan. )

I recall the people commenting on the anime was that his early models had extra things like hamsters and teddy bears and things, and a lot of the expressions and poses were very similar to those common in anime, which I did not know anything about way back when. Also his 1947 panzer girls, wearing short skirts, and thigh high stockings.

Otherwise I agree, the detail is impressive. The poses are a lot more human than a lot of serious soldiery looking figures. I reviewed a few of his figures back on the old site, the one I remember specifically is the Luftwaffe Auxiliary standing in front of the Hispano Messerschmitt.

See here:

Aurora Model * Scale Models

My plan is to utilise 2 of the beach series figures as girls in a German garden, enjoying a summer, as a NATO AFV trundles by, to the obvious delight of the crew. Well, it’ll make a change from your average German road or training area type-bases I tend to use, or so I like to think(!)

My first wife did not appreciate my hobby. Then she attended a model railroad show and while bored and sitting by herself hating every second, an older lady sat down next to her; she asked the lady how she tolerated her husband wasting his time with childish pursuits. The lady replied that she appreciated it because she knew that when her husband comes home hiding something under his coat with a sheepish look on his face, it’s wasn’t porn or drugs but a train car, and that she’d much rather him be working on his layout then down at some bar or strip joint; it was also a lot less expensive than boats and golf clubs and shotguns and host of other things. She also commented something on the lines of it’s it’s a good way for him to blow off stress and he was always happy after some time with his hobbies - “Happy wife, happy life” applies to husbands, too. My ex said that after talking to the lady it gave her an appreciation for my hobbies.

Good friend of mine is also a musician as well as a historian and model builder. His wife does not understand any of it and is always demanding he needs to get rid of those books and guitars and models. He finally told her something to the effect that he had those interests before he ever met her, and he’ll have them after she’s gone so leave him alone.

Forever-wife is ambivalent towards my hobbies but fortunately, we both like as well as love each other. We don’t share much in the same interests but we have the same core beliefs, which is essential. And she knows that if she needs me, the models come last.

Reminds me of the model railroading cartoon on the wall by the club layout.
The text on the cartoon was:
“My wife says that if I buy another locomotive she will leave me.
Gee, I’ll miss her …”

The text can obviously be adapted to other hobbies:

God, but this topic is beginning to veer from the saccharine to the maudlin.

It probably is time to wrap it all up.
