New Support/Subscriber options for KitMaker Network

I have activated the Discourse Subscription system which allows pretty much the same functionality as Patreon (minus the merch). Patreon is taking almost a third (28%) of normal donations (that’s assuming there is no merch which is an additional cost). So it kinda sucks basically. I thought maybe the merch would be a draw but I kind of doubt it’s that much of a plus.

So… new options! You will likely see the Support banner show up on different pages since yesterday. Support if you can. Switch from Patreon if you choose to, your call. I will of course appreciate all the support you feel comfortable giving as hosting and other costs have gone up lately. I am paying about 100% more for hosting vs. 2021 prices (and we have upgraded a few sites hosting as well).

And here I thought discourse was doing its own sells thing. If we closed that, how do we get back to it? Asking for a friend.

Damn, they already got my annual subscription payment. Guess I’ll have to make the switch on May 01, 2025.

I’ll kill the Patreon set up a few hours ago and switch to the KM subscription.

Patreon is greedy if they are taking ~28%

Thanks Wade for being our first supporter in this group! Let me know if you have any trouble cancelling the Patreon signup, but I think it should be pretty easy.

Thanks again,
Jim

Yeah I didn’t even know it was quite that high until I just calculated it from past statements. Stripe, which is the cc processor for this new system, takes the standard 2.9% and like a .30 fee per transaction. Much more normal.

I had to cancel my Patreon last year as our bank account got hacked so we stopped everything that might of been an issue. I will set up the KM subs over the next few days … its worth it … and thanks again for all your hard work you put into the site !

I’ll carry on donating a few $$$ via PayPal from time to time as I did in the past.

And yes, thanks for all your work you put into this wonderful forum, Jim!

Is there any chance you can add a Paypal option besides the direct credit card details?

I second that or even direct paypal to you Jim.

Question: Since I’m already paid-up on Patreon through May 1, 2025… If I switch now through the above link, do I stand to lose almost an entire year or will that roll-over into the new subscription? TIA

Technically you don’t need to have a subscription to enjoy the site, it’s just a convenient way to help Jim keep the lights on. So if you switched it would be just extra help.

Well that is my understanding anyway, if I am wrong I eat crayons and why did you trust me anyway.:upside_down_face:

Hi Mike
I think I understand what you mean. Sadly the answer is no as these are all automated payment systems. However if you did need to stop at some point I could do something on my end to keep you in a subscriber group for the additional months owed.

Cheers
Jim

Well as my buddy and follow poster Glenn used to say….”Ryan is always right”. Good luck with that.

Is it possible to send a cash contribution?

You will loose your months. That’s what happened to me.

I wanted to change my patron account payment from bank account to Cc and as soon as I canceled I lost the months I had left. It was paid for the whole year but I lost the membership.

I created a virtual card and used that for my payment so as to avoid using a regular card. This way I will be reminded to fill up my credit next year to renew my subscription (I chose a yearly payment). :+1: :+1:

Somebody mentioned Paypal, and I second that - I’d rather set up payments through Paypal instead of offering up my card details to Stripe! Any chance of a Paypal option Jim?
