Greeting one and all …A project that’s been on going for a little while for me … Hobby Boss Jackal.
Most of us are aware of the wrong box titles so no point going over that. I took the decision to make the vehicle as updated as possible and set about some research well to be honest hours of research [days ] and gathering photos watching online clips and studying other people’s builds …then I had the idea why not ask supercat …so a brief email to supercat put me I touch with head of sales …and after a bit of back and forward questions and a couple of phone call …I had the information I was after followed by an invite to the factory on completion of the model ……didn’t expect that …anyway enough drivel…
The chassis went together with out too much drama any pitfalls having been pick up from other builds . I took the opportunity to add bolt heads to the suspension components along with the hydraulic lines out to the wheels …and opened up one of the side compartments.
Anyway a picture or two for you .
coming along really well… extra detailing really lifts it up
i have one of these but it’s the first one i have seen getting built so i shall be following this build with interest.
Yup I have one to build and got all the bells and whistles for it so will be following your build. My old unit Light Dragoons used these on Op Newcombe.
Just be aware that the water jerrycans (shown in the pics above) in the kit are US scepter type and not the British type, though I suppose in the racks that might not be noticeable.
A lot of issues or missing details on this model, I am building it too right now.
Mudguards are provided in flat and strong phoetched parts, it is impossible to give them the right shape, same problem with PSP planks.
Missing cable for the winch.
Missing cover on steering column.
Uncomplete seat belts.
Several fit issues.
Bad 50 cal machine gun, while the L7A2 is very fine.
Bad 50 cal ammo boxes, I replaced them with an AFV Club item
Missing gunner seat and gunner platform.
Missing L85 stored in the doors.
Towing straps can be added in the front and rear shackles.
Missing mount on dashboard on the left of the steering wheel.
Missing tarps for rear and front lights, and winch.
Bad extinguishers and without markings, Accurate Armour has a very good item for them (A098)
Thanks for that mate .I was aware I’ve used them enough in the past …lol.
Yes the kit has many issues indeed but I’ve been slowly working through them .The grenade machine gun is pants and way overscale as is the GPMG again way too big …I’ve already used the AA fire extinguishers they make a big difference…
The drivers ‘cmdr station needs some work .HB provides two ammo racking which for a very early vehicle is ok however the vehicle now has a glove box for what of a better word …also various additional bits added . The top of the dash also has a prominent hole on the cmdr side …and underneath a supporting bar which goes to the floor. As mention the steering column is missing a prominent dust cover .I replaced some of the molded parts with individual switches. Also to the left and right the two support bars were removed and new ones added in the updated position., Accurate Armour fire extinguishers were added . I find with HB every thing is just a bit larger than it should be …

Hopefully these will show what I mean
The next job was the air filter.Again HB have had a fair crack at it with a nice rendition of the end … however it’s too small and sits at an angle.
So I put it together cut off the end and added a bit of plastic card to lengthen the body. A few odds and sods from the spare box to provide some detail. The end was then added at the appropriate angle along with the debris clean out tube .
Not that much will be seen of it when the cover gets put into place but at least I know it’s in …
Next you was to open the left side panel and attempt to recreate what’s inside.
I think in hindsight I should have opened the top and panel to the right as well …but you live and learn
The side storage compartment has changed as well initially the box has two storage box units as depicted by the kit and Eduard etch provides etch for this however the new one has a pull down set of rods which provides for a more flexible solution.
If you have any pics of this I’d be very interested in seeing them as they are very hard to find.
I’ve bought books in the past for projects but as I typically don’t build multiples of a kit they then become less useful and I usually then sell them. Also it would seem that these may not have updated vehicles in them. Thanks anyway.
Loving this thread Terry. This kit is on my wishlist, so I will be following along with interest.
Thanks Barny yes that’s the version in the kit, however Op Newcombe wagons are updated with various changes and add on’s. Getting good close up pics of the inside of that right hand door is proving to be quite hard. I’ll get there eventually.
Who still has Jackals in the units ? If we find that out, I can do some asking around ??
I was in Gaza Barracks in Catterick where LD are a few months ago, however they have Jackal 1’s as training wagons and the inside of the door is not the same. I’m back in this week to see the training officer so I will have a look about and see what I can find. If you could ask about also Johnny that would be great. Thanks very much.
