Spitfire!

Hi Joe
Wheel wells are the same colour as the undersides.

Super realistic … they do look spot on …

Well, a little more work on mine: first, I’m awaiting decals as I fear the ancient ones I have - ie the kit ones - may not be workable. If they are, all well and good but I thought I’d better have a contingency plan.

Second, I haven’t made a model aircraft for something like 50 years so I’ve been taking the painting a little easy (no cam nets or mud to mask my errors here!).

Lastly, as site-members may recall, I mentioned I was planning to depict it something akin to the kit box art, so I’ve selected a base and figures, and have been trying to get the feng shui right:

Conversely, a Hurricane has just flown over my house!

To explain: I live almost next door to the Boscombe Down airbase and I’m assuming it’s to celebrate their Battle of Britain dinner night, as roughly around this time every year, I’m treated to, normally, a Spitfire performing a few aerobatics, but I’m pretty sure tonight’s contributor was a Hurricane. How lucky am I?

After watching all the great progress happening here … I thought I would make a sedate start on my Mk XII …

Have put a layer of primer on everything while it’s still on the sprues, and will start cutting soon…

And have ordered the AK RAF day colours…:+1:

These arrived today, just in case the Frog ones fail:

(Kit decals shown on the left)

I hope at least the serials numbers still work otherwise I’ll have to hunt replacements for those down and that really would suck the fun out of it all.

Give the Frog ones a coat of tamiya clear or the equivalent and that may well keep them stable enough for when you use them, especially the numbers/lettering. I have done it a few times in the past with good results :+1:

Sorry John, I’m being a bit bone here - do you mean “Clear” as in a varnish?

Yeah sorry mate … I think its XF22 ? or x22 ? will check when I get home for the right number

OK: I don’t use many Tamiya paints so I was - pun intended - *unclear(!)

now wheres my wallet …

Thanks for that; I think I’ve seen that in my local model shop (Salisbury), and as I’ll have to make a trip anyway I’ll probably give it (and Tamiya Clear) a closer look.

All turning out to be a lot of effort for what was meant to be a relatively simple undertaking; the nature of the hobby as ever(!)

It definitely is my friend. I have so much just in case stuff i have little room to move in my cave. But i always find …oh I need that and have to make a trip to hobby shop for it…and come back with more just in case stuff.

Being retired I tend to lose track of the dates (and an awful lot else (!) but when I heard that engine I immediately realized that it was a warplane, rushed inside to get my binos and Lo! And behold! I’ve now checked and it was definitely a Hurricane (I seem to recall that the Spitfire’s engine makes a separate, distinctive noise); but hey! On a balmy early evening what’s not to like! I mean, I am so lucky.

I also tend to charge around the garden whooping like a kid whenever the odd Typhoon takes off with that “ripping the sky apart” sound.

Off topic again but the Hurricane has just been back; yesterday must have been a rehearsal and to day the dinner (being a Friday that makes sense) anyway, brilliant display for nearly, what? 8 minutes or so. I’m not really up on my planes but this was definitely a Hurricane with 4 cannon in the wings.

Chuffed! Mojo re-ignited certainly!

Yeah it’s our BoB dinner night tonight in the mess…

It’s x22 ok mate … but that stuff Pete showed is probably just as good if not better ?

Roger that; have a good dinner - easy on the port mind let alone the champagne breakfast(!)

Lucky! Only time I get to see them is at Cosford airshow.

The BBMF operates two Hurricane’s, both cannon armed IIC’s. Probably my favourite variant of the Hurricane. It’s already a much more rugged aeroplane than a Spitfire and those cannon just made it look tougher!
