Stryker Upgrade and the new A1 Family

Is this Trumpeter-specific, or is it compatible with AFV Club also?

Trumpeter specific. Ettore is working on AFV Club Specific items. The two are not compatible as there are dimensional differences between the two companies.

i have spent 4 year doing a conversion of the Canadian LAVIII into the New Zealand NZLAVIII. there is lots wrong with the Trumpeter LAV kit even for the Canadian version with the hull the wrong shape in places and because the lower part of the hull started as a Stryker kit it also has errors that are different on the LAVIII. most of my conversion i hand made for bits of plastic packaging etc and a few spare parts from the kit and even some of the sprues for the A Frame Towing Bars (NZ version). i have even written a guide that at present is 147 pages, over 400 odd pictures and over 13,300 words.




still a few small bits to finish on it once i get my mojo back. even made the wipers for the gunners sights which are 2.5mm long

this shows the main difference between the Candian and NZ LAV’s the upper engine deck layout. the NZ version is closer to the Stryker but there are still differences there.

i was not lucky enough to have clear shots like this when i did the conversion and finally got some good shots a year ago today on Cambrai Day (Armoured Corps Birthday) as i was on base for the parade and celebrations.

this is the NZLAV-R Recovery version with the ground anchor and a bigger winch inside

another simple thing most of the kits miss is the ID plate on the front right side. something so simple but would have been easy to include (i have seen it on the Academy kits)
it is the Type - Number built - Year built

There’s a kit of a different vehicle coming out soon that may have different ID plates, in case you build more than one,

What you’ve done is superb, However, quite a few things still need to be done - some much more difficult because of how Trumpeter did their applique armor. For starters, this needs to be done:

Haven’t seen a HEMTT, LVSR, Abrams or Stryker in real life yet. I hope I do one day, but not in a war environment.

No problem. You can leave out the foot.

You may want to design the whole portion of the engine hatch in front of the line, and let the modeler cut it off and replace it on the kit part. Because of the new bolt arrangement I think this would be the easiest solution.

is that a torsion bar hinge added to help open it easier with the extra plating on?
you can carefully shave those bolt points off with a sharp knife by using just the very tip going around it taking tiny slices until they come off then can be transplanted to a different spot. you can see here i removed 2 rows on the right side ready to fill the gap as the LAV only has 4 plates on the front not the 2 bigger and 4 smaller ones like on the Stryker (another error carried over on the Trumpeter kit)

Progress so far, still have to design the engine torsion bar thing 18bravo pointed out.

And it turns out the Trumpeter kit is the easier road to convert to a Stryker A1, all other brands have the Exhaust and air intake on top molded in.

You can, and I’ve done so, but it’s tedious. In this thread I used a punch set to create new ones:

Mine actually look better than the ones on the kit, There’s also the Voyager set that includes them along with the tie downs that are seen on many of them.

Nicely done so far! But your statement about the Trumpeter kit being the easier one to convert is debatable. Here’s why:
The lifting lugs on the FB versions are behind the armor joint. The armor is notched to allow for it. On the DVH A1, the lifting lug is in front of the joint - the front piece of armor is notched to accommodate it. This is any easy fix for the AFV Club kits as the armor comes in separate pieces. Since Trumpeter’s armor is cast on it’s a little trickier.
