Tamiya Challenger 1 WIP

Thanks! I can wrap a hunk of something inside a piece of wine foil and shape it to fit in there, paint it and do the cover.
And I have pics of the rear can retainers, thanks again.

I can’t decide on whether or not to replicate the very rough surface texture on the turret or not. I would like to as it will cover many or all of the little traces of modifications I made along the way.
I’ve already started another one, plan is to do one from the late '80s or early '90s, no extra armor but with the fittings to accept it present.

So, the surface texture isnt that rough to be honest and not overly visible …
For reference and discussion only.

I think if you do add some, it will look over scale …

Have you thought about using Mr Surfacer to prime it ? I have heard others say it leaves a faint trace of texture and it may also hide any little blemishes from your mod’s ?

Ref the other the one you are doing … a late 80s wagon wouldnt have had fittings for add on armour.
And an early 90s one would either have it fitted for Ops only and if not on Ops, normal side plates are fitted ? I cant recall seeing a Chally 1 in an image with the fittings but no armour fitted …

I think the bad boy above is ready for paint … :+1:

Cool. I have a pic or two of tanks in the Balkans, later timeframe, with no additional armor. Would it be safe to assume the bosses for the upper glacis plate might be present if the tank had been to the first Gulf War?
I already added them to the current/next build, see pic…

And, everyone I’ve tried is out of the Echelon decal set I need, even Echelon.

Yes, you are ok leaving this fitted to the front :+1: … You on about the decal set for 10 ?

No joy with the decals yet. All the vendors I know of, including Echelon direct, are out. I’ll probably prime tomorrow and check for booboos.

Russ - I have most of the Echelon decal set (I only used the relevant numbers for 11B). Do you need a specific vehicle off the sheet?

John- I’m doing the tank from page 58, MMI April '20 issue. I think a pic of it is on this thread. The yellow triangle is “up” with the number 10. Registration number is 79KF22.

Russel, don’t forget, you also need the a Prussian Eagle badge for the TOGs door and one red/yellow chevron bar for rear mudguard (it only has one, other was probably torn off)

I have a couple of Star Decal sets for Chally 2 and other assorted vehicles in the Balkans: between the two I have the mud flap reflectors and one Prussian Eagle. I have sets 35-C1294 and '95.

Perfecto :+1:

Looks really good Russel. And I would agree, she is ready for paint

1 question though, how did you do the basket on the left side of the turret ?

Regards,
Marc
(I can’t wait until the extra parts for mine come in)

Thanks Marc. For the left side turret basket, I used the PE mesh from Eduard set #35332. It’s intended for the rectangular framework included in the Cr1 Mk3 kit, and is just big enough. For the solid front piece, I used some scrap brass, probably from a Dragon M4A1 Sherman set that had the full fenders in brass, or maybe out of a DEF Models M47 set, the part that’s supposed to be one of the muffler heat shields. Anything big enough will do. That part I annealed and rolled on an Exacto knife handle. The frame work is Evergreen plastic strip and the top reinforcements are more scrap brass.
The pic below shows it right after I mounted it. The parts attaching it to the turret side were added after mounting it to the turret side.

If John doesn’t have the decals you need then I can spare the KRH pieces from the Echelon set.

There is also an article on the KRH Challenger in Kosovo in Military in Scale November 2000.

Russ, or @JohnTapsell or @ptruhe , do those decal sheets come with the 7.62 ammo box decals ?

Johnny - you get six ammo box decals - scroll down to the bottom of the sheet, next to the ‘black rat’ and above the reflector bands.

Russ - I’ve included two images below - first one is the full sheet and the second image shows what I’ve used. Let me know what you need from it.

Paul- I think the “generic turret call signs” section from the top sheet would do me nicely. That’s also got the “make your own” registration numbers, even better. I have some big chevrons somewhere, probably from a “Desert Storm” sheet from Echelon as well.
What can I offer in return?
I also found the Nov 2000 issue of MiS on ebay, got it on the way, thanks!

Edit: I just ordered the Echelon sheet from SMM! I can hang on until it arrives, maybe…
