^^^This! Was thinking the same.

Leave it as is and evaluate when done .
If you plan on spraying Invasion stripes I would use that area to test spraying the metal paint color on top of the rivet decals. If you don’t like it no worries as the Invasion stripes will cover it.
Good call! Going to seal in with a light coat of SM-201 but will start on wings
A little progress. Working on superchargers, gave a light layer of Tamiya Red brown mixed with LP-1 which got a little grainy, which works perfectly! Will add a black wash and won’t go too nuts.
Just about ready to get on to the next round of color on this guy. Sealed in all rivets with another coat of SM-201. Will gloss coat everything next. Seen lots of videos where they don’t but worried I need an extra layer or too of protection before masking for invasion stripes.
Well done Steve - you can’t go wrong with an overcoat to protect decals IMHO.
Please don’t take this as a criticism but I don’t get the need for positive rivets as I thought the P 38 was flush riveted . I am certainly open to correction.
Anyway, we’ll done regardless.
Cheers - RT
Thanks! No negativity taken! For me on this one it was simply a desire to add some complexity to my build as I’ve never done it before and it’s my second Tamiya P-38, definitely not as into accuracy. That said they barely look raised in person and adds a nice “wow” factor which I’m happy about.
Gotcha - it’s all about creativity and enjoyment .
Artistic license and all that …
Just need a flat coat but I’m liking the look of the superchargers.
Finished with black wash and an overall rusty colored wash. Added some silver pencil too.
Olive Drab on! Will modulate more with weathering, was hyper focused on no overspray.
Also with the rivets I spent more time de racking the masking tape than actually putting it down.
I just can’t stop following your topic, love it… those rivet decals are great… but are they still visible under the OD?
Thanks appreciate it! So there aren’t any rivet decals on the forward nacelles or fuselage, but I do intend to use a little aluminum paint to highlight the few molded in rivets under the olive drab!
Getting ready to gloss before decals, here are my options:
Tamiya X-22
Alclad Aqua Gloss
Mr Color GX-100
Nothing it’s glossy enough for decals
I know that no matter what it sounds like some of the luster goes away when covered so just looking to see people’s opinions or experience. I usually only use future and have used Aqua gloss one time, but think I applied it wrong (too misted on). Thoughts?
Added some modulation to the olive drab. Overall looks good. Too thick a coat on front panel, flat finish on the end will rectify this glossy spot I hope.
May I suggest testing this on something before commto a gloss coat?
Had a long talk recently with our very serious airplane contest winning model guru in the local IPMS club. He felt Quick Shine blew everything else away. Far superior to Future and far superior to AquaGloss. Felt he kew what he was talking about as he’s very active in both USA & UK model contests and shows and does extremely well.
Specifically superior leveling compared to other gloss finishes when applied both wirh airbrush and by brush. Also much harder than Future or AquaGloss after drying.
Also adding to case for Quick Shine.
Ooh nice! I forgot about future I do have a bottle of that. But people say better than future? Will order a bottle! 20 bucks to last forever ain’t a bad deal.
Yes, much better than Future according to my source who’s well proven to be at or near top of the model game. I plan to test Quick Shine but have been building etc.
New thought, will attempt a decal on the underside to determine if a gloss coat is even needed on the metal paint. If decal goes well, then I can mask and gloss just the invasion strips and anti glare panels only. No surer way to guarantee I won’t dull the metal finish than to not put anything else on it lol.
