Thank you Phil! I started following Nightshifts technique, got annoyed and just dry brushed instead using Vallejo German Grey and Afrika Korp.
Figures look fantastic Martin.
Thank you!
Fantastic Martin. I love it.
That is just awesome.
Airfix Tiger I Operation Citadel (Kharkov)
Starting picture.
Changed my mind and bought yet another Tiger for this campaign. This is a secret squirrel Academy Tiger circa 2016 so do not expect much. Includes an easy mode, one color paint scheme option but may try the box top vehicle. Found a good online video on building it close to correct. Can live with the tracks.
Plan to start in about a month but dropping this picture, just in case.
The Kharkov and Citadel operations are two separate campaigns, months apart. And I don’t think that kit has the parts for a Kharkov Tiger?
David
I found a build video on YouTube for the Airfix Citadel Tiger. The creator claims the model contains all the major parts necessary for a March 1943 Tiger. He states those parts are correct for both paint schemes that come with the model. He then lays out the parts to use–the correct engine deck pieces and the correct turret pieces. There is also some stuff about the track changing cable. Maybe some small things I forgot. I have not pulled out my Tiger books and attempted to verify his statements.
The person in question states a few times that he knows a lot about Tigers. However, he is not you.
Well, now I am keen to see the video! Can you link it or give me a name?
Right now I will simply state that the Tigers fighting at Kharkov were mostly manufactured in December and January. There was a single one, owned by Grossdeutschland, that seems to be made in March for some reason.

Oh! I am so sorry. Let me find the link…
Airfix / Academy 1/35 Tiger 1 Early ‘Citadel’, Full Build Review
Most of the ‘build it this way’ stuff is at the beginning of the video. About halfway through, the builder decided the model was not very good and kinda punted.
Edit: For anyone wondering what we are on about…
Airfix A1354 includes two decal options.
Tiger 114 from Heavy Panzer Battalion 503 appears on page 51 of Tiger I on the Eastern Front (Original Hardcover). The picture was taken from the left but the turret is turned to the rear, showing the right side. It is being towed by a pair of Sd.Kfz.9 halftracks. Airfix instructions show this Tiger as mottled Panzer Green over Panzer Yellow. If this is the only photo of 114, the very exact scheme provided by Airfix is mostly conjectural.
According to David, parts in the box will get you to this Tiger.
Tiger C01 from III Battalion Grossdeutschland appears on page 61 of Tigers in Combat II (Original Hardcover). The picture was taken from the right rear. Airfix instructions show this Tiger as solid Panzer Yellow. That looks correct to me.
According to David, parts in the box will not get you to this Tiger. I presume it was built after April, 1943 and something important changed.
As an aside, flipping through Tigers in Combat I, Tigers in Combat II, and Tiger I on the Eastern Front, there are lots of one color Tigers (or Tigers that appear to be one color). It makes me wonder just how many of them the Airfix model would build.
Okay, I am stopping here with this one. There are some more things I could do to the base but I need to get moving on other projects for now, plus I am in the middle of swapping out shelving and need to clear room while that happens.
The paints are all AK Real Colors. Base is plywood and papier-mâché, grass is Woodland Scenics; pigments are various brands from art supply houses and some Vallejo.
The tank is supposedly an actual vehicle from 3.SS-Panzergrenadier Division “Totenkopf” that also happens to commemorate an important date in my personal life history.
Still have two other Tigers to assemble.
Finally I got my kitten out of storage.
I might not finish this one in time… but I’ll start it for sure.
I bought this one when it came out many moons ago.
Is it the original release with all the extra goodies or is it the repop where Dragon removed the goodies and replaced it with a middle finger pointed at the purchaser?
It’s the original release, 2005.
With all the goodies
Welcome aboard. If you like, you can go up to my post above (post 143). There is a link to David Bryden’s review of the kit and the tweaks needed to make it accurate. It is a great build with just a little work to make it better.
Just to clarify on David’s site, what ever he mentions at the end of each review blog is what needs to be added / fixed.
Cheers
Thanks ! I’ll take a look at it
