Tin Can Sailors Campaign (10/1/20 - 10/31/21)

Tim,

Thank you, I did add a some rust along the hull and the lower parts of the superstructure, nothing heavy.

Your PE work just amazes me. It’s hard enough at times at 350th scale, let alone 700th.

Very nice progress on your builds guys. I like how they are coming together. Was the HMS Campbeltown really that pink color?

Change of plans on my build! I will no longer be building it as the USS The Sullivans, but as the USS Erben DD-631. After a discussion with another builder on another forum who knows a heck of a lot more about Fletcher-class destroyers than I ever will, it was determined that building The Sullivans in her 1945 fit was not possible with this kit without major surgery, so Erben it is. Managed to get a little bit more done on her:

The side depth charge holders are a little lacking in detail on the kit, but removing them would have been almost impossible without removing the throwers, so I decided to dress them up a little with the P/E. Need to add some more doors to that forward superstructure. I’m, actually making progress, but i don’t think I’ll finish her before the Campaign ends.

Jim,

I too may not make the deadline… but this is Rory’s campaign… what say you Rory; extension?

Extension, Extension, are you crazy! I just spent the afternoon getting all the railings on the Buchanan!

Just kidding, I am good with an extension.

I did manage to break that flimsy main mast. Just to be safe, I ordered the metal mast for the Dragon Fletcher destroyer kit I have.

Madness!! increases speed on the war drum

Its all good  These campaigns are meant to be fun and working under a deadline is no fun at all. How long do people need?

I just need a week.

That would do it for me as well

Cough, 6 months… cough, cough

Tried to edit the ‘official’ end date to the end of October but no dice. Gentleman’s agreement then

@Russelle Your 6 months are not to be trusted

Funny, isn’t it? Yes, so-called Mountbatten Pink (sometimes called Plymouth Pink) was an actual British Admiralty regulation color used on several Royal Navy ships between 1940 and 1942. There were even a light and darker versions of it.

I used the White Ensign Models Colourcoats rendition, which very closely matches the sample in Snyder and Short’s Royal Navy World War II Ship Colors, Set 1.

Its surprising (given the dour british stereotype) but the RN has some very odd and colourful schemes for their ships. Just look at HMS Prince of Wales in her far east scheme or some of the Eastern Approaches schemes. Interesting to look at, pain in the bum to mask and paint.

If we do one again next year, I’d join in again. This seems like a rich enough theme area.

@TimReynaga @McRunty Thanks for the info, guys. It does seem a little strange to paint a ship pink, even if it is a pinkish gray. Going for sunset colors, maybe? Who knows. I know that the LRDG painted some of their vehicles pink, so it’s not totally out of the ordinary, I guess.

Hi Jim,

Your Erben is coming along nicely -

It is amazing how much photoetch will dress up a model! :+1:t3:

Thanks. It really does. Now, if I just don’t loose it all under the paint, that’ll be great.

Campbeltown’s 12-pounder gun, its barrel limiter (depression rail), and the debarkation ladders for the commandos have been added to the foredeck. I also added the safety rails.
