I know right. He nailed it! I was looking at getting a classic airframes Maachi from local store and then saw it called for that paint scheme and said not a chance I’m tackling that

Thanks guys, I was very surprised that it turned out so well using an old technique. It was simply Vallejo acrylics thinned with a spot of flow improver and an old brush. What I found was that the paint pulled into the centre of each spot, creating it’s own feathered edge. I recently got AK’s Luftwaffe paint set and found they did the same straight out of the bottle when I experimented on a bit of scrap plastic. These new acrylics do seem to be much better at stippling than the old enamels.
Can’t say it would work with bigger scales, but worth a try.

Wasn’t happy with the mottling so I redid it. Much happier now. Think it looks more natural. Gonna decal tomorrow. I would still like to tone the camo down to tie it together, especially on the mottling. Open to suggestions!

Looks great.
I have seen others do a light overspray with thinned pale blue. Might help blend them together.

My Phantom is waiting for new national insignia to arrive. Decaling wnet overall good. Decals provides in the kit are really good and thin. They sat well with a little help of Set & Sol. Unfortunately disaster happened when I moved on to weathering. Of course I sealed model with clear gloss varnish but it didn’t helped much. Wash which I have created as usual from oil paint dilluted with white spirit “attacked” decals. :sob:
Luckly I started from horizontal surfaces and star & bar from left wing is in worse condition and need replacement which shouldn’t be a huge problem.

Mead, I like the mottling now, and I liked it before. So both versions work very well with me.

Looking forward to see more.

Thanks! I like both too, but the big difference the second time around is that I took my time. So I got larger more irregular blobs that seem to match photos better, and much less overspray/spitting

hello,

my entry for this campaign:

Whelp, disaster struck with the ME-262. The hobby boss decals were a bit on the matte side. I thought my paint job and clear coat was good but apparently not… when I went to put on the upper surface balkencruez they silvered terribly. In my attempt to salvage it I used Mr Mark softer which ate right through my paint job :(. In my attempt to fix that I ruined the decals and the paint job. Gonna have to bin this one, it’s beyond repair

Getting increasingly frustrated with wingy things, this year I’ve started 4 and have binned all 4. Starting to get discouraged… gonna try this campaign again with the Tamiya mosquito

Don’t bin it; use it as a paint mule to test stuff on. Always handy to have. Mine is a 1/32 21st Century Toys Me109G-4 that was missing a few parts so I couldn’t finish it. Been using it for over a decade. It currently is the same color as the 1969 Dodge Super Bee I am building, Metallic Blue.

Sorry to hear about your mishap so close to the finnish line. @brekinapez idea is a solid one, an idea which I’ll need to adopt as well

Yeah pretty unfortunate :frowning: oh well live and learn!

I’ll do the mosquito now! Was planning on it originally anyway!

After a few hours of hard work, a lot of cleaning of moulding flashes, I finished the cockpit.

Fitting test with the upper part and the canopies pieces:

Perfect !

The goal is to finish this model before I start my new job on 7 February.

Sorry to hear of the problems you had.
Hopefully the Mosquito will go much better.

Don’t bin the 262. It’s a great model. Maybe you could strip the paint and try again.

Alright, so after calming down a bit. I think as @phantom_phanatic stated, I can strip the wings, repaint them, and then use my cricut to cut out the balekencruz markings, and spray them

Yay! I was gonna be real sad if you tossed it.

I’m glad cooler head prevailed lol. It’s easily my best aircraft effort yet.

Probably gonna buy a Tamiya bf-109 to build some confidence back on an easy build and then finish this one off. I think some time away from it is a good idea

Alright I think I’ve calmed down enough to strip the wings. What’s the best chemical for this? I have Tamiya thinner, lacquer thinner (both hardware and tamiya), 95% IPA, and methyl hydrate (methanoal) on hand

I’d worry all those are too hot.

I use Simple Green cleaner (Home Depot I think). Easy Off also works, but less scientific to apply because of the can. Having said that, I’ve also never tried just stripping a section on a complete model.

If I were going to use any of your on hand options I’d probably start with a little bit of the IPA on a cloth.

Have you considered sanding and priming?
