Today I was able to finish up The Mattel Eagle One soldering, testing all the power switches and then finally secured the new floor in place.
A step forward with the removal of supports from the “caged” 3D prints for my M125. Learned on U Toob that if the pieces are soaked in warm water for 5-6 minutes they release from the supports more easily. Even shuttling between the iso wotsit heater in the basement kitchen and the hobby room I released 6 or 7 pieces in 20 minutes.
ETA I’ve been doing 5 minutes at 50c for the, mostly smaller pieces.
Onward!
Took a break from the M1068 PE and got some base colors on the German 577 variant.
AK RC NATO green
XF69 NATO black on the tracks because I hear they don’t like Mr Color self leveling thinner.
AK RC Rubber black; sprang for some DEF steel wheels.
Al, that’s the Best profile picture in the history of the forum ! A+++
The model is looking great too!
Yes Al that is a foreboding avatar. You look like the Darth Vader of modelers.
Working on the Pz IV entry for
Campaign: D-day-80-years today.
Not following build sequence on this one. Cleaning majority of wheel & suspension parts before starting assembly.
The TriStar suspension is more fiddly than average as show by the instructions.
Separate tires deserves a few curse words but the fidelity of detail is very nice. Likewise, adding bolts to final drives.
Pin vise helps making removing mold seam from return rollers painless.
@SSGToms and @Armor_Buff - Trying to mix it up a bit, LOL.
Managed to add footman loops without losing any. They’re really easy to use…maybe next time they’ll be straight…
Got some primer on the M1068
I won’t bore you with road wheel pictures this time…
And more done paint-wise on the G3 GE
Edited for gramer and spelin
Ice is a bitch. That is why the south usually shutdowns during a winter event, not much you can do about it.
I’ve made some good headway on the Jeep J10 conversion:
Getting into this, it became clear that while close, some of the proportions and elements, while similar to the J10, are not the same. On the big changes side, there is a new grill, modified hood, new cab roof, and step side fenders. As for what’s most obviously wrong, the kit vehicle sure appears to be narrower and taller than a J10, but that’s fine - I also stylized the stepside fenders a bit, as I prefer this look over the more squared up styling of the real truck.
And, while I’ve been on a roll, started this, which is a VW Type 87. I thought when I bought if it could be converted into a simple, baja bug. But when I got the kit, to my delight, discovered that it’s all wheel drive! wow! So, it’s getting more heavy duty mods:
The plan is to make this similar to the image in the upper left - so far so good. I think I spent more time on getting the wheels right, than on the suspension! There are adapters, and plenty of carving, drilling and filing on the kit/resin/evergreen. The resin wheels are supposed to be used on a Meng Hilux, but they seem pretty good for this too. That said, there is a lot going on up front, with a differential, drive shafts, steering linkage, and so on. I decided not to make the steering posable. Clearly this has a way to go.
Cheers
Nick
Really digging the wishbones on the Type 87.
Although I’m generally not a fan of desert schemes because I think they’re boring, I decided after painting the G3 GE NATO green, a lot of the cool details on the M1068 might get lost.
I opened an elderly bottle of Model Master Acrylic 4812 CARC tan and promptly tossed it in the trash because it had turned into goo.
Also in stock were a couple bottles of AK RC 079, CARC tan, probably leftover from when I built an M1150 a long time ago (10-12 years?) . The bottles were unopened and the paint had separated- I took a chance and added some self leveling stuff, mixed it up and did a small test smear.
In the morning it seemed to have dried okay, so
Edited to add: before I came to the forum, I had no idea AK Real Colors were supposed to be thinned with lacquer based thinner. For years I used AK Real Colors high comparability acrylic thinner. Ah, ignorance is bliss.
Looking good. I too have the Legend M1068 set and plan to do one w/an interior. I also plan on a straight M577 w/interior…eventually. Maybe someone will work up a 3D printable M577 interior file. That would be most welcomed.
Thanks HA. Even I might do a 3D printed interior.
That would be awesome. I have started playing around with CAD a bit since I got my 3D printer last Christmas. I am nowhere near capable of designing anything worthwhile yet. Fingers crossed that you do.
The APU/generator I used is a 3D MicroCosmos item, as well as the head and tail lights/guards/ the right rear fender step, external fire extinguisher box, the drivers hatch and vision blocks and the exhaust outlet.
There is actually a sonic 3D part remover. After learning of it, I cupped my hand around the base, and cut into it with a pair of nippers. The snapping sound detached several of the tiny prts, whole and unscathed, which fell into my hand.
These presented no problems removing. Single attachment point. I actually used my taboo Pakistani tweezer nippers to remove them.
There is enough meat on them to use regular tweezers, and they don’t take flight…
