What do you think of Apple’s “Masters of the Air”?

I’ve seen three episodes so far.

I must admit I mostly agree with this guy…

Band of Brothers and The Pacific still rule…(even their respective opening credits are better  )

H.P.

How do you not use a ton of CGI? Can’t really fly airplanes of this vintage.

I don’t watch anything from Apple.

Understandable, I’m only doing the free trial.

Apple’s content isn’t nearly as bad as the worthless crap Disney excreted over the last six or seven years.

Hoping all Disney’s of management and board of directors get decapitated employment wise at fhe next shareholders meeting due to absolutely horrific financial performance.

I know that the enemy aircraft flew by quickly, but just blurs is not realistic when actual accounts were they could see the pilots face.

I think the problem with CGI, is not that it’s used, but it’s overused. Specifically, in a lot of aircraft movies with CGI, the aircraft don’t move naturally or move in ways real aircraft can’t, or are shown taking damage that would destroy a real aircraft, but keep flying, and so on.

So far, I’m enjoying it. I guess that I’m the minority. Good but not great so far. Better than Memphis Belle is most respects, but not as good as the film 12 O’Clock High. I will say that the CGI is better than what was in Midway 2019, but still a bit over the top in places. I haven’t read the source material for this series, unlike the other two series’, so I can’t call out accuracy staying close to that material.
At least I’m not downright disgusted with this as I was with Disney/NatGeo’s pathetic attempt at The Right Stuff. Those are wasted hours of my life that I’ll never get back.

We’ll probably never have another movie like Catch 22, where all of those planes were real. And holy cow did they bounce around on the tarmac.

All in all, I understand why HBO passed on this one and Apple :apple: went for it. Surprisingly, I pretty much agree with ye ole Google audience summary on all three of these epic miniseries.

I want to like Masters of the Air, I’m trying to like it but seldom can stay awake for more than 20 minutes when watching it. It just lacks the zip of the other two.

This sad because the US Navy also deserves an Epic WW2 miniseries with a $250 million dollar budget.

I like to see one on the US Pacific Submarine Fleet, featuring the more notable boats like the Wahoo. There are enough surviving Gato and Balao class boats that you could do all of the interior scenes., The rest can be CGI - I don’t care,
Has the name the Silent Service been used for anything yet?

Agreed, that would be perfect.

I’ll have my people get in touch with their people.

If they ever go that route, I’d like to see it based on USS Enterprise. She was in it from Day 1, participated in every carrier battle but one, and only missed Coral Sea due to escorting Hornet for the Doolittle Raid.

Definitely win, win and win some more!

Three groups of main characters, one in the submarine service, one on the USS Enterprise CV-6 (20 battle stars) and one on a destroyer probably USS O’Bannon DD-450 (17 battle stars)

You could probably have an episode or two on Taffy 3.

There was a series of submarine simulation games published by Microprose called Silent Service in the 80’s and 90’s. Mostly for the various home computers. C64, Apple, Atari’s etc. Would make a great title and subject for a TV show.
I had Silent Service II on the Amiga and remember it being bloody difficult!

I would absolutely love to see a well done movie or miniseries on Taffy Three. The Battle off Samar was the very best of the US Navy, with the little DEs and jeep carriers trading blows with the main IJN fleet.
