This book came to my attention a few months back when it appeared in these forums.

Having just flipped through it for the first time, the book already far exceeds my expectations.

@TeeAge Those look really nice! I should draw up some flower and plant card models for use in dioramas.

It is an awesome book. When it was published there was a bunch of supplemental information online but sadly that seems to have disappeared. I should have downloaded it all I guess…

Well that is unfortunate! A number of book reviews mention supplemental information available online and I was hoping to review it. Perhaps a copy of the site still resides in an internet archive.

The book contains a fairly extensive reference section including some online resources. I was planning to explore those as well.

One thing I find curious is the very small number of motorcycle pictures. My understanding is that motorcycles were heavily involved in scouting tasks. The vehicle section includes the kubelwagen and schwimmwagen but no motorcycles. Perhaps they get more mention in the text, which I have yet to read.

A couple of kits from Andy.

A couple of Beautepanzer! The 7TP was on sale for $27 and the Panhard is the ICM kit but cheaper at $25 both steals in my opinion for interior kits! I am really excited for the 7TP.

Also got tired of almost knocking glue bottles over so got this for $4

Very happy today, my standing hobby quest for a quality condition Paasche VJR concluded successfully!

The chrome AB is a side feed Paasche V.

The red handle one is the Paasche VJR. It’s a gravity feed, has a tweaked trigger & custom matched nozzle & needle. The long discontinued VJR should be perfectly suited for how I enjoy painting.

Slick as glass trigger, small low cut color cup and good balance, I have high hopes.

Congrats on your find. I’m sure we will see some of your work with the new brush soon, which I look forward to seeing.

Wade what size nozzle is the VJR?

Both have #1 nozzles, needles etc. I’ve always ran a #1 in my VL.

Sidebar

Recently, an airbrush guru told me #1’s tend to clog in the VL Have done it since the 90’s without issues provided the paint (Floquil, enamels & lacquers) is properly mixed & thinned.

However, I’ve always had a massive issues with spraying water based acrylics. I wonder now if that might have something to do with #1 set up in the VL. The guru felt like that would be the case and couldn’t really believe the #1 set up works perfectly well in my VL with my paint of choice. Of course, he doesn’t use Floquil, Gunzy or Tamiya :scissors: cut w/Mr Color Leveling Thinner either. He favored a mix of acetone as a universal thinner etc.

Also talked with a couple of AB guru’s at AMPS, the guy w/MicroWorld Games is a real deal A+++ guru.

Didn’t know Angel was a AB guru, did he have someone working with him? He usually vendors by himself.

What size is a #1? .2mm?
I have “massive issues” shooting acrylics through any of my .2mm airbrushes but no problems at all shooting AK Real Colors (lacquer) thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. It’s the medium, not the airbrush setup. Acrylics dry too fast (unless you add retarder and flow enhancer) and make the airbrush suffer from tip dry and clogging. With lacquers, you’re running lacquer thinner over the needle/nozzle as you spray, so it’s self-cleaning. No tip dry, even if you stop, wait, and start shooting again.

Yeah Angel had Todd Malischek, an AMPS Master, set up at one of his tables shooting AK 3Gen paints on various models and answering questions. I sat and talked to Todd for about an hour, he’s a friend of mine. We got into some deep philosophical airbrush discussions.
He told me about an airbrush of his that he forgot to clean when he was done. He came back to it a week later and had to use vise-grips to get the needle out! He cleaned it and it still worked!

Ryan, I was struggling to recall his name and Matt reminded me, it was Todd. He shared the vice grips and needle story!

Matt, the Paasche needles are fat and they don’t list sizes. I’d guess the #1 is ~.4 mm needle give or take. It will spray ~1/32 of an inch but that’s with everything dialed in & warm paint*. The new generation Paasche AB’s have the popular size small needles.

I lack the talent to exploit the technical capabilities of my Iwata Micron B for the most part. I can spray near hairline lines with it but have no idea how to apply that in a useful way. So balance, feel, smooth operation, reliability, inexpensive parts, ease of maintenance and a slick trigger carry the importance for me provided the AB sprays well and can go to ~ 1/32.

*I like to place the bottle under an old incandescent light for an hour or so if fine lines are on the menu.

I have used vice grips on my Iwata needle. Got the airbrush to work again. I am a caveman when it comes to airbrushing so the Iwata’s talents are wasted on me.

I do warm my rattle cans before use but not my regular paint. :face_with_monocle:

My airbrushes are as sterile clean as a surgical scalpel.

Same here, I’m wondering if I have a problem

I spend ages on the cleaning but, then I don’t seem to have the issues that others talk about.

The operator on the other hand is the reason for poor performance :wink:

If I could afford an autoclave for my airbrushes, I would buy one in a heartbeat.
