What the postman brought today (Modelgeek)

It is a terrible movie. The apocalypse is one of my favorite genres and I heard of Zardoz and it stars Sean Connery…..so I thought….it has to be good. Wow…..was I ever wrong. I read about the film and the role had been offered to Burt Reynolds, but he turned it down. Sean Connery took the role as he wanted to star in a film that would help him be seen as a character other than James Bond. Well……I guess it helped him be seen as the actor that used to play James Bond that decided to star in one of the worst movies ever made while wearing a red diaper!! :open_mouth:  The movie had a budget of around $1,570,000.00 and only grossed $7,227.00 world wide. Hmmmmm………….I wonder why??

Right?? After reading the script, Sean should have……..to quote Monty Python…..”run away….run away”!! :open_mouth:

Heading into new territory…

Roundnova is part of the 30 Minute Missions line of models from Bandai. The intended scale is 1/144, making them compatible with Master Grade Gundam models.

For those who do not know, the original Gundam was about 60 feet tall and 60 tons. Every Gundam since was designed around that standard. In 1/144 scale, that works out to 5 inches tall.

Bandai released the first 30 Minute Missions model in 2019 and the line continues to grow steadily. Two gimmicks are in play. First, these are foe Master Grade Gundam models in 1/144 scale. That means Bandai can appeal to Gundam model builders without paying a license fee. Second, these models use a system like LEGO bricks allowing the builder to customize them. It is possible to mix and match parts from any model in the line to make custom creations. In addition, Bandai sells a bunch of upgrade part packs allowing further customization.

Some of the Gundam anime series were pretty good but I am not a fan of giant samurai robots. However, I do like mecha in general because…Macross.

Anyway, from the moment I first saw these 30 Minute Missions models I thought, “I can use those parts as the basis for all sorts of science fiction robots”.

Roundnova, released in May of this year, is my favorite 30 Minutes Missions model so far and my first purchase from the line. My intention is repurpose this mode as a 1/35 scale cargo handling robot.

For anyone wanting even more information, 30 Minute Missions models have a very compact and delightfully unoriginal backstory. At some unspecified time in the future, the warring people of Earth invent giant samauri robots because of course they did. A short time later, a portal appears in Earth orbit. Enemy giant samauri robots come out of the portal and attack the people of Earth because of course they do. Miraculously, the pilots of these alien robots are almost identical to human beings because of course they are. All the nations of Earth band together to fight the aliens because everyone knows human beings never double deal against one another or team up with a foreign power. Then a second portal opens and more giant samurai robots belonging to a second alien race come out. Perhaps to the surprise of no one, they attack both humans and the first aliens. Even less surprising, members of the second alien species look just like human beings. However, and this is really important, some of the giant samurai robots from the second alien race looks like cat girls. I am going to be honest. If this actually happens, I am turning on the human species and joining that cat girl faction because, oh my goodness gracious, 60 foot tall robot assassin cat girls with light sabers.

An aside because I feel like it… When I was a kid and saw my first Bandai giant samurai robot model I thought something like, “Wow! This model is super high quality!” That was true. Curiously, Roundnova is really no better than that 40 year old model. Modern military models are way more detailed. In my opinion, the people at Bandai need to up their game.

I think these can go here, I picked up this pair of marble runs that you build, they can be connected together and are powered via a USB-C port as they light up.

There’s currently four versions in the series.

Your bike just reminded me of a far-off built model of mine:

Obviously something in the design - 1920s to sci-fi(!)

it was most likely copied from something like that and George Lucas gave it a burst of ILM hollywood dust.

Picked up a BanDai A-Wing today from my local shop. It’s much better than the old AMT one I did many years ago. Can’t wait to get stuck into it!

I like the included display stand with the Death Star gun turret. It’s a nice touch!

Nice. It’s a brilliant little kit. And the turbo laser tower is a nicely detailed kit on its own!

I built one a few years back and it’s a great kit

That’s nice! The blue works well on it. Brings back memories of hours playing X-Wing in my youth.

I like how they’ve broken down the parts. You should be able to paint all the grey and red parts separately and avoid any tricky masking. I’ll see if that theory works!

Nice! Is it full size or smaller?

A Saturn is still on my wants list. They never really took off in the UK, market here was dominated by the Playstation back in the day. Of course, I was still messing around with Amiga and PC so didn’t get into consoles until quite late with the original Xbox.

Cool. I had the Sega Saturn until my apartment got hit by lightning. That was one of several electronic devices that did not survive.

@phantom_phanatic I’ve never had a Sega but we had Playstation in the 1990’s.
@corsutton, “got hit by lightning:open_mouth:

I don’t know what a 1:1 Sega Saturn looks like so here is a couple sprue shots next to an inch ruler.

That is nice.

I bet some clever modders will find a way to get a Raspberry Pi or similar micro computer inside it. Would make a great mini console.

We’ve seen a lot of mini consoles come out the last couple of years, Mega drive, Super Nintendo, Playstation, C64, A500 etc. I’m surprised we haven’t yet got an official mini Saturn. It had some cool games. SEGA are probably being protective of the licence.
