Ok, first 2 members of Thorin’s party completed the best I could , so in worst case I have at least something finished . That would be Mr Burglar & Balin.
I’m quite proud of myself I finally started hitting figure with brush in places I wanted paint to be… sort of still not good tho in all of these layering, glazing and other stuff… and NMM attempt on The Sting is … pathetic… mediocre at best
I’m thinking about investment into natural hair brushes because they seem to give more control over paint application. Can you guys give me some suggestions what would be the best choice if I wanted to buy 0,1 & 2 size natural hair brushes and not spend like more than 50€?
Used various citadel and some Vallejo to complete. I might add few turfs to base if I make or find some nice looking products.
Beautiful looking red tones on both of those figs, very eye catching and the faces are expressive too.
Don’t be too hard on yourself about techniques- they are tricky things to get right- main thing is to practise and keep at it even if it doesn’t go how you want it to. I tried NMM for the first time recently on a bust- made a bit of headway with a gold part but made a mess of a silver part and actually stripped it and went back to metallic paints. But I learned some things and will try again- that’s just the way figure painting goes and that’s also how you improve!
As for brushes- Windsor & Newton Series 7 are hard to beat- steep price but they will last if you take care of them. DaVinci and Scale75 are decent too.
Thank you @Karl187 - I will check them. I’m thinking also about Rosemary or Da Vinci. All about same price. In meantime I decided to pick something “reasonable in price” - natural hair brushes from Army Painter, but it seems they aren’t quite good - hair started separating quickly and I can’t find good balance of thinning paint.
I tried them on next 2 subjects - Gandalf & Fili. I struggled with grey robes of Gandalf and couldn’t get good blending of subsequent layers. From other dide I almost got the best painted face on Mr Wizard, buut I flooded it accidentially with Shade paint from Citadel, so … next time
Ok, so today I finished Thorin Oakenshield. I made him with his famous shield ( kit allows alternate version - dual wield of axe & Glamdring (I meant Orcrist!! ), but nickname is a nickname
I’m getting more and more familiar with brushes and now I know I need to have something that is long hair wirh pointy end. The smal “precision” brushes, from Army Painter seem to be very fragile and can’t hold too much paint for more than maybe 10 sec before they start to dry and pigment separates. The only thing that is really working for me now ( for details) is Army Painter “Wargamer:Regiment” that looks like equivalent of 0 size brush, but short - like 1cm long hair.
Your color work is great- the figures look vibrant and catch the eye. Army Painter brushes are ok- I find they last a fair while if you use brush cleaner pretty much after every session. ‘The Masters Brush Cleaner And Preserver’ is a good choice for this. But they still won’t last that long- at least not with a nice, fine point.
I lost pace a little bit due to holidays and heat wave that turns stone into molten lava ( at least in Warsaw ), so had to work only in shadows of sweaty nights ( today is still 27°C at 21.00!!) .
So today another two finished master dwarfs - Dwalin & Oin. So I’m close to half of the pack (7/15 finished).
Heat wave doesn’t help to keep paints wet… even on wet palette, buut day off is a day off, so I couldn’t waste it. After 'few" hours I finished Kili, Nori & Bombur.
Tried some bonus moves on Nori painting his some ‘checkerlike’ patrern on coat and cloth on and they came out 3,6 RTG ( not great, not terrible ).
Hello fellow figure modelers. Reading through the forum has inspired me to join the fun, If allowed, I’d like to join the campaign. Mostly I model WW2 stuff, but this time Sci-Fi has captured my interest. My entry will be a series of figures from the Games Workshop Warhammer 40K universe. I’m calling it the Xenos Scum build. It’s all the enemies of Mankind. First up are the Space Orks.
I can’t wait to get started. It’s always fun to break out of the norm and work on something different. Keep up the great work, guys. Lots of wonderful work being done on this campaign. Thanks.
Bill
Beautiful work there Jesper- really dig those grey tones you have done- you have brought out the sculpted detail and given the grey areas a great deal of definition and interest. You also have an eye for making wonderful bright color areas that pop out and draw the eye- the inner red of the cape and those armor pieces on Fett.
