1942: The Turning of the Tide

Biking Days Officially over …… For ever

Some idiot was nice enough to knock me off my bike the week before Christmas…

Sounds great, Phil. I especially like one of the green mottling over sand schemes. Really beautiful schemes in my opinion.

Hi Everyone,

Hope that everyone had a merry Christmas and are hyped up for the New Year! Personally, I’m happy to put 2023 in the rearview mirror. I’m very excited about this group build campaign.

At first, I was thinking P-40B from the AVG. But, after considerable and careful thought, I’m going with a 1942 TBF. My good friend Matt gave the Accurate Miniatures 1/48 TBF as a gift, and this is a fabulous opportunity to create and have fun. So, here’s the “before” picture!

Till next time, be safe, wash your hands and have fun!

After reading the book “Death of the leaping horseman”, I am planning to build this one as a panzer III of the 24. Panzer Division (Leaping horseman division) at Stalingrad, August/September 1942

Nice! That’s a great book, isn’t it? I don’t know whether appropriate decals are included but I see Echelon has a sheet for 24 Pz Div Pz IIIs.

Hi Phil,

The book is good if you are interested in the topic, but it is a little bit ‘dry’ to read’ from begin to end.
It is more a day to day battle report with at the end of each day a list of casualties and decorations given that day.
But it has some nice pictures in it and is a good reference about the division and the battles they fought in until November 1942.

The kit provides decals for the 24 panzer div. and I do have the Echelon decal set as well, so I should be fine, I think.

I’ve gone ahead and moved this one to Active so I don’t miss it later today. Have at it!

Howdy, I would like to join this group build. I need an Administrator decision for my subject choice. The Russian white P-40C decal sheet says the plane is from the Moscow area, December 1941. I am assuming some of these planes might have survived into January 1942. I really don’t want to build one of the other planes on the decal sheet at this moment. This build would also be entered into our club’s “Snow White” theme contest later in 2024. Thank you, Don

I think your assumption is a safe one and will allow it.

There, I made a decision!

Now I’m going to go lie down.

I’m thinking about a dual build:

Get it? Dual? Duel?

Anyway, I’ve made a bit of a start on the A6M2, but not much:

But I’m looking forward to a bit of a snag. I’m planning on aircraft from Enterprise and Akagi at Midway, but the A6M kit doesn’t have markings for that. I do have a sheet from the Hasegawa Zero with all I need, but the colors don’t match the Eduard kit (which I think is probably more correct):

So, do I just mix 'em and say that the national markings are factory and the unit markings were painted on in the field with a different shade of red? Or just chuck it and go with the full Hasegawa decals? Interested to see what you all think.

@michaelsatin I’d say damn the torpedos! Mix and match away my friend!

I’m going to have to re-evaluate my choice of subject as the kit of the Hudson I have is for the MKIV/V which has the twin wasp, I do have decals for a MKV but it’s based at Ohakea as a part of No.1 OTU and not at Guadal Canal. I’ll have to think about this some more. But I do have a plethora of choices regardless!

You know what? I’m an absolute glutton for punishment! My choice is the Trumpeter 1/48 SM.79-II from the 283 Squadriglia Mediterranean 1942. I have this soft spot (one among many LOL) for the SM.79 and Italian camo, so here we go!!

The camo will be challenging but should be fun and it’ll look stunning once done! (Hopefully LOL)

Excellent choice. I have a 1/72 model of this I’d like to do. I’m keen to see how you get on with yours.

According to the instructions there is a 1942 version from battle of Midway in both these boxes…

so lets go :+1:

Nice! I’ve never seen this kit built so it’ll be interesting to see.

@michaelsatin, go for it! Look at color differences in real wars - anything goes! :slightly_smiling_face:

@c4willy, we share at least two soft spots :grin: Both the Sparviero and the camouflage. I have the same kit in my stash and I am looking forward to see how it builds up.

I’m still checking my stash as I have “multiple targets” for that one… My first choice is Bf 109 F-4 from Eduard in 1:72nd… I’m thinking of Marseille’s plane form African theatre.
