Yes sir. That’s completely doable in the CAD world.
Could you do 1/35 casting symbols?
Ah! I almost forgot that. Casting symbols for Sherman tanks. I included a .pdf for the multiple casting marks used on M4 Shermans.
Microsoft Word - Foundry Symbols and Trademarks.doc (free.fr)
The Tamiya M51 Sherman lacks the casting mark on the main hull and differential housing that the Dragon version shows.
The hull mark was from General Steel Castings Corporation, Eddystone, PA and the differential cover was for American Steel Foundries Granite City, IL.
Hi Dan and Reynier,
Those are doable. Just took one of the markings and extruded it:
The questions now:
-
How would you take the marking, letters, and numbers off of the printed resin plate? Scrapping them off with razor blade?
-
These will be quite small in 1/35 but they will print. So you’ll take each tiny number/marking and superglue it to the kit part?
-
To ease the scrapping part, does it make sense to 3D print them and NOT UV cure them before mailing (the resin will still be soft)? In that case, the modeler would need to UV cure it or put them out in the sun after attaching to the kit. Or UV cure it before mailing out so the parts will be hardened and less prone to damage?
Please give me some ideas.
Kind regards,
James
in that case, the main concern would be how flexible (soft) will the uncured resin plate will be as opposed to fully UV cured and how easy or hard it’d be to cut off the plate with a sharp enough razor blade.
The size will be an issue, especially with casting marks that have multiple pieces.
I am adding below a link to the page that breaks down what all the casting marks mean, in terms of year of casting, location, etc…
Sherman casting markings (free.fr)
One thing I was thinking; you could cast the markings with an additional layer, so that when you cut the casting marking off, it’ll have just enough material to keep the entire image complete for gluing, but still thin enough to look good once glued in place.
Re: the tow bar:
All separate parts for maximum pose-ability would be my vote.
Will need two!
Have busted my knuckles on the real thing a few times.
Friend of mine broke his foot by dropping the lunette end on himself while hitching up to a vehicle.
Hi Mike,
PM me for more details if you’re serious about purchasing. $4 each in 1/35. S&H within the US is $6.
Since my minimum order total is $20 (less than that is not worth a print session and my time unfortunately), you may want to pick a few of other things I have available. Thanks.
Kind regards,
James
- Uncured UV resin will be soft and flexible but not too soft to handle. It is a bit sticky though. Cured resin can be brittle and hard but if you use ABS-like (more expensive), it may be slightly flexible. Most likely, a fully cured resin is not going to be ideal.
- I think this will have to be a trial and error. I will need to experiment but time is not what I have right now… I am thinking a happy medium may work - not fully cure after printing but a quick 30 second exposure to UV just to strengthen the prints so they don’t just break apart when taken off.
- Sure, the markings/numbers/letters can be printed in thicker extrusion to have enough stuff.
It would be nice to hear from someone who actually has experimented with UV resin for this.
Kind regards,
James
I was actually thinking of casting symbols and numbers used on the French R35.
Dan, can you show some reference photos? I am not familiar with R35s at all. It’s not really my genre.
Looking at Prime Portal right now, see what i can find.
James,
I will.
Why I ask is the tamiya kit is lacking and only one PE company makes them but it’s a pricy set.
As the vehicle is mostly cast, they are quite common.
Dan,
Can you show me or direct me to the PE set you’re referring to? I can potentially use that as a template.
As to Primeportal link, it takes forever to go through each large photo. Either I need screenshots of the relevant photos or some reference document like Reynier provided for Sherman. Otherwise, it’s not time-efficient for me to go through every single photo there.
Kind regards,
James
i think i found it. it’s the big Renault medallion that’s shown on the Voyager Models R35 Upgrade Set
Hmmm. W/out a close-up photo of it, that’s not helpful…
Hard to find. the he examples on Prime Portal and Net-Maquettes do not have this plate.
