Sounds like a plan is already under way matey … I like it.
Getting there Wade. I really should look at getting a Pz IV. Only ever had one, which was ages ago, the Academy one and it was a dog of a kit … only kit I have ever actually binned once started … I have seen you and Angel @ayovtshev build some superb ones, so theres some great inspiration there …
I actually quite enjoyed building Italeri’s ancient Ausf. H. Thought it was quite a decent kit. Added a few extra’s but no p.e. or resin.
The Higgins boat was really a Personnel craft, the craft in the centre is an LCT(4) which are very easy to scratch build as a waterline model or there is (was) an Accurate Armor kit but it is a bit pricey. Incidentally the censor has been at work on the picture, there was no LCT60, it will be 600-609. The 212 on the dark stripe on the front of the bridge is the LTIN, the Load identification number. The dark stripe will be either red(Juno), blue(Sword) or green(Gold) beach indicator
My LCT(4) before reloading her with a Canadian Artillery Battery and renumbering LCT876 with red stripe for Juno Beach.
Test fit tracks today…will tweak for a bit less sag.
Love those Sector35 tracks so much more than Fruilmodel tracks.
Thanks for the feedback and images Andrew, I’ve followed some of your work previously and really enjoyed your fine craftsmanship,
…alas, something that I lack,
.
I limit myself to an A4 sized base, so an LCT, even if I possessed the skills, would be too big. Even an LCM 3 would be difficult to fit, hence my artistic license regarding the LCVP, .
Thanks again,
G,
Thanks for those kind words. The place the small boats would be loaded with jeeps or similar would be a river crossing, smaller boats could be carried on trucks and launched into rivers off a half submerged trucks. Buffalo’s and DUKWs would be used as well and artillery could be firing across the river. So I guess your scene is credible in a slightly different setting.
Again, thanks for the feedback Andrew, maybe I have to rethink this one through…possibly a beach landing, have to see what interesting features I could replicate, I’ve always found sand a challenge in 1/72nd, so it’ll be a good test,
.
Thanks again,
G,
G,
Use chinchilla sand, available at pet shops. It’s as fine as dust.
Thanks Matthew, that’s a great idea, I’ve got a big bag of it as I tend to use for giving a rendered look to buildings, thanks again for the suggestion,
.
G,
Hi everyone. Apologies but could I possibly enter even though this is late? Things got a bit hectic and I thought I had entered my Mercedes 170VK build into the campaign when I began it. Although it has moved along a bit, would it be possible to still join as it was my original intention and it was being built within the campaign time frame ?
It’s a telephone line vehicle of the German 711 infantry division which was active on D -Day, mainly against British paras. That unit was part of the 15th army and was located between the Orne and Seine at the time.
Thanks in advance for consideration.
Sam, hi. I have been following your 170VK build so I am well aware of it and how good it is so far. Although it is over the usual percentage of a started build allowed, I will be happy to let you drop in with it. It isnt like this is a build thats been sat around, it has been built up within this campaign time frame and I think it will be good to get it finished in here.
All I would say is, from now, post any update info and images in here as often as you can as well as in your build blog. Welcome aboard.
and can you click on the Going button in the first post as well if it allows you to.
Thanks heaps! First campaign!
Okay, some progress made on the Sexton. I have base painted the interior and started on the detail painting. Dragon does not give you any decals for the gauges, so I hand painted them in.
After first painting the interior SCC 15 Olive Drab, I remembered that I should have painted it SCC2 Service Colour. The Sextons were delivered in SCC2 and there was not enough time to repaint these in SCC15 before D-Day - priority was given to repaint tanks and frontline vehicles. So a quick repaint was in order.
I have also started the Fruil Canadian Dry Pin tracks… worst Fruil tracks I have ever assembled. Every single link needed to be drilled out as they are partially blocked. Then I had to re-drill them to join them as the holes in the two links do not line up and have to be widened for the wire to pass through. Then, the runs all want to curl sideways. Using gentle persuasion I have to manipulate the tracks into a straight run.
Fortunately I tested the track with the drive sprockets Fruil supplies. If I had glued the two sprocket halves together without testing them, I would have been unable to fit the track as the sprocket is too narrow. I had to glue them with a slight gap so the teeth would fit!
Thats coming along nicely Wade … but being as yo uare a Pz IV guru …it doesnt surprise me !!
Sexton is looking good Pete. Damn shame about those Fruil’s. Thats a lot of extra work you could do without. Are they old or new ones ? I have read in a few threads that the quality isnt as good as it used to be ?
Again, thanks for allowing a late entry. I’m still wrestling with the windows and realise that I’m not very good at fitting and securing plastic windows. I’ve now muffed up five sets of front windscreens through either cutting the size wrong or getting glue all over them. I’ll have another go today at getting it right.
Still lots to do but this is where the Mercedes VK170 is at currently;
I’ve weathered the underside of the vehicle and I think it looks ok.
I also don’t like the kit issued windscreen wipers that are chunky and thick so I’ll make some better ones.
Kit issued;
Intention;
Have you tried the clear plastic from things like grape/ fruit cartons. I have used it a few times with good results.
Yep that’s the sort of plastic I’m going with now. The original kit issued windows were like scale bullet proof glass!
