IDF 75 Campaign

You guys are doing amazing work. I am jealous. Nikos that is nice work. I love how you did the anti-slip on your tank. I will have to remember this trick when I build my IDF tank.

Sadly, I had to close up my stuff in storage for few months as we had to redo several things that were in bad shape in our house. Last thing that is left to do are the floors. On the bright side, it gave me an opportunity to clean off the dust from the few built models I have I have left in my cabinet. Including few other items.

It’s interesting as the cabinet is fully closed from all sides but dust still got in. Kind of like the dust inside closed canopies

MkI Takom
MkII Takom
MkIID Takom, although the Academy kit is pretty nice and can be built into a vehicle for Operation Cast Lead, whilst Takom provides a later variant.
MIIIBaz Meng (needs tracks, the ones provided in the kit are rubber band style but too hard )
MkIIID Meng
MkIV Meng but the Academy kit is also nice and with some TLC can look great
MkIVM Meng

Well I took the plunge and instead of starting another build I worked on the HobbyBoss Mk3D trying to correct and improve whatever possible.

I resized the back of the turret because it is 7mm too short and used the leftover Meng turret bustle rack to finish the turret rear. (light gray parts are Meng, white is sheet styrene)

I also added the GPS antenna at the bustle rack (long rectangular thing on the left side) and changed the commander’s cupola to the original one

Some further detailing is left and on to the final painting.

I also need to source some Galil rifles with a folding stock for the turret roof mounts.

Depending on the time frame, M4 could also work.

Interesting, which version do I need?

Well, although it looks like it, technically it isn’t an M4 but a locally produced hybrid. You can read the story here: https://gunsmagazine.com/guns/rifles/idf-colt-carbine/

If you look at the third photo from the bottom in your post, you can actually see it mounted on the standard Galil rack left of the loader. Interesting that the rack, at least in this case, hasn’t been modified to acommodate the new rifle type and which is kept in place by a rubber band. Sometimes they have optics (like in your photo) and/or forward grips (like in the photo below), so there isn’t really a standardized look.

I think I will go for Galil, found these beauties

Those are not good. Tank crewmen were issued the short barrel version, AKA ‘Glilon’.

I will shorten the barrel then…

Maybe the old Dragon Modern Machine gun set is an option - again the longer barrel:

It also has Negev and M60 which may come in handy.

Yepp, that could work, although the front grip is different, but I guess that’s barely noticeable. I’m not sure, there might be some other, minor external differences too.

Already sent decent photos to the 3D guy, he will modify his design for a short barrel version.

More work on the HobbyBoss kit.

Repositioned the .50 cal on the mantlet to sit properly on its mount and a bit more at the back than the instructions suggest. Per the instructions the mg is sitting too much at the front.

Original position:

Instructions, notice the positioning

New position

Now it looks more in line with the real thing

I added the chains at the rear hull baskets:

and then started measuring and checking the position of various stuff on the hull and turret, which lead to the conclusion that the HB turret is sitting about 4mm more at the front than it should be. Compare it to the position of the Meng turret.

After further measurements and comparisons, and although I had already lengthened the rear of the turret and added a proper bustle rack from Meng, I decided to correct the position of the turret. The main issue is that the hole on the hull deck where the turret is supposed to seat is too far at the front (about 5mm) and combined with the shot turret length it was looking way off.

I removed the positioning ring from the turret bottom

and used the left over parts of the ring to add material to the deck

I also (and that is something I never thought I would have to do) rescribed the panel lines of the hull, mainly around the stowage bins at the rear

Now the HB kit is almost in line with the Meng kit

with the following exceptions:
the hull is about 2-3 mm too short because of the way I assembled the suspension (too tight - comprerssed)
there is an obvious error of the roof proportions e.g. the front half of the turret roof (from the front end up until the rear of the added roof armor) is 3 mm longer than it should be and the rear half of the roof, from the hatches to the bustle rack is about 4mm too short.

Notice also that the Meng mantlet .50 cal is sitting a bit more at the back than it should, again because of the way the parts are designed and shown in the instructions.

Hi all,

I’m a bit late to the party, but I’m thinking of building this beast:

It’s been on my must-do list for ages!

FIRE OUT!!! :index_pointing_at_the_viewer:

I freely confess that I’m intimidated! I was going to build an M60 myself, but might have to retreat to my comfort zone and do a wingy thingy after all.

Michael :israel: :stuck_out_tongue:

Michael,
don’t feel intimidated, just go for the M60!! We’re all friends here!
I am erring towards an M60A1 myself as my intended build is going nowhere at the moment.
Cheers,
Richard Howden.
