Lifting the Fog of War: Command and Control

And of course there’s a documentary. I would not under any circumstances be trying my luck with that Sgt. doing the intake that’s for damn sure.

Don, if you’re referring to “The Glasshouse” documentary, you’re right; we still had a modicum, a modicum of discipline back when it was made - 1993 I think. We also seemed to be able to make quite good documentaries then as well; no endless music, short cut-aways, talking heads and truncated soundbites and all the dross that now seems to pervade our screens.

In my opinion, it’s worth watching the whole series whenever you’ve a spare couple of hours.

Bit of a thread hijack but it was you who threatened me with the Glasshouse!

It’s my thread, I’ll decide what constitutes hijacking. The Hill is also a classic I haven’t seen in some time, so many things now added to the watch list.

I must admit I’ve alwys enjoyed The Hill; i think one of the best bits is when the RSM quells the prison riot - priceless.

It´s May, 1st 0830h here in Germany, so I started my M1130 build.

AFV Club Stryker build starts from the inside. I painted the backside of the clear vision blocks with a Molotov Chrome Pen. Later I will add Tamiya Clear Red.The pieces of iron wire are for the M151 Protector RWS

Here’s my starting images…
It’s going to be a Ch2 configured into the Commanding Officers tank of the Regiment -c/s 11B

However, to make it a bit more unusual, I will be finishing it as NOMAD, the CO’s tank from RTR, as it was presented on the Amalgamation of 1 & 2 RTR on Aug 2014 …Black

All images are crown copyright and for ref and discussion only.

During any real time battle, the tank Regt CO will be in his 11B running it. It will have a minimum of 3 antennas maybe 4 depending what nets he is working from.
This will be pretty much out the box, except for some decals I had made through a good friend. I will also add the 3 antennas to show it’s a command tank, and a muzzle cap as per the pics. I will also try and get the RTR flag made or make one… Enjoy :grinning:

Edit. Before anyone asks, this wasn’t the Ch2 done as the Black Night. Different tanks and Black Night was a BAE demo tank only.

Holy crap it’s May already?!

@HermannB, you’re working at a fiendish pace there my friend! It’s looking real nice though, keep it up.

@Johnnych01, I know a bunch of us have joked about an overall black model but I think you’re gonna be the first do actually follow though, at least for armour. I’ll be interested to see how you go about colour modulation and the like. Also, get your decal making friend to print the RTR colours. Sandwich some foil in between and bob’s your uncle.

@Tank_1812, I secretly hope you never find that Humvee kit because I really want to see that FT built.

As for the rest of you lot, Gentlemen, man your benches!

I understand. I might have a lead on a Revell kit but it’s far from the only issue. I think I need like 4 or 5 SINCGARS radios, correct mirrors and Marine exhaust (current plan is rob my Tamiya M1035 kit or find leftovers from other peoples builds to keep my kit whole for the last two items).

The TSF only needs the FC Model decals and maybe American bits.

Not an expert, but I think these two would also have the label “Command”.

Here one of my “sleepers”. CR2 “Command” with MILES gear from JMTC.

The warrior could be a Command version, not sure if the 3rd antenna is on the Veh in front though where the 2 blokes are stood ? If it has 3 it will a command variant Some TACP warriors/Spartans may have 4 antenna fitted and the Arty FOO wagons usually have 4 radio fits so, 4 antennas.

The Ch2 looks to be a normal gun tank as I can’t see the 3rd antenna fitted.

It use to be that Chieftain and Ch1 would come as a standard fit for 2 radios but have the 3rd ABA mount blanked off just in front of the search light on a Chieftain and I think ? it was blanked off forward left on the Ch1 turret, and then the command tanks 0B, OC sometimes OD would be refitted into 3 set tanks and have the 3 whip antennas up on exercise etc…
Ch2s now come with a 3 antenna system already in place.

Into sole thing that looks hopefully like this.

And because the biggest (and really only) mod to this kit is the turret, that’s where I’m going to start. Because if I can’t figure this out, I’m going to have to go to plan B.

I can’t find a ton of documentation for this ride, mostly because there just isn’t a ton written about Canada in the Korean War. The book I do have, Don Dingwall’s excellent Canadian Vehicles in Korea describes the mods as being done in the field by RCEME assets and being accomplished by removing the 37mm and coax, welding over the gun ports and adding that BREN mount to the turret roof along with some overhead cover and hatches.

I have exactly two images of this vehicle in the field showing the turret along with a couple shots of other folks builds. Let’s see how this plays out.

That’s one of the 3 ABAs … As I said above, Ch2s now come standard with 3 ABAs fitted. There is that one at the very rear, one to right of the commander and one to the left and rear of the loader. The image only has 2 antennas fitted on that Ch2 so that usually makes it a standard gun tank. It could be OB or OC but only have 2 antennas up… Impossible to know unless you know what the C/S is. But from from that image and with the 2 antennas up it just looks like a gun tank.
Also, command tanks are not usually put on public shows because of the secure fits inside the turret. And if they ever were, public would not have access to the turret. Might be slightly different for Mil only events but probably still restrictions on access.
