Phantoms 60 Campaign

Hi all, I just found this campaign and I want to say that these builds are absolutely phantastic. Last night I just phinished Monogram’s old F-4 in 1/32, thought I’d post the phinished product. Sorry for not having any in progress pics.

That is a great looking Phantom, Dennis! What decals did you use for this scheme?
Have fun modeling

Thanks! There are actually zero decals on this kit, all of the markings are paint masks from DN Models which I sprayed Tamiya lacquers through. I highly recommend them, especially if you like more obscure paint schemes.

That is even more impressive Dennis!! It is amazing the detail you were able to do just using paint masks. VERY well done!
Have fun modeling!

Hi again

Nothing fresh to show yet, but I am officially (and even more belatedly :frowning: ) back underway!

Now I’ve got some competing projects finished, I can move the Phantom from its makeshift extra workspace to my proper modelling room. This alone should give the build some much needed momentum, because it’ll save going up and down 2 flights of stairs every time want to paint anything!

I’m going to try to make the most of my last week of part-furlough to set up a better recording area for my music, but I hope to also make some progress on the Phantom.

All the best

Rowan

Cockpit done, didn’t really add anything but disappointed by the complete lack of cockpit detail

I forgot how challenging the fuselage and intake seams are on these Hasegawa kits.

I look forward to building my Academy F-4J next to see how it compares to these old Hasegawa kits.

Hi mates,
I just want to inform you about the progress on my Fujimi’s F-4 Phantom FG.1
Now decals and smaller stuff (canopies, undercarriage doors)

Some decals were a bit disappointing though, because they are too transparent. So in some places (roundels) the white color appears light blue(underside wings) or light pink in the red areas…but I won’t try to correct it in fear of ruining the whole thing.
I think I can live with it.
Cheers
Peter

Looks really nice Peter. It’s a striking paint job…:+1:

Well, good news for me, I found some spare RAF roundels from Airfix in the perfect size :sweat_smile:and they covered the right places (at least for the upper side of the wings and on the intakes) Maybe I find 2 more for the underside…
Cheers
Peter
P.S. Still quite a few stencils to go…

Decals are done now, there’s still the canopy parts. They will get some etched rims from the kit, then the drop tanks on and the final clear finish to lessen the gloss effect a little.

Cheers
Peter

Hi again

I fear I’m going to have to admit defeat for this campaign and shelve my Phantom to work on again later in the year. With a stack of reviews to write and another big build project looming as soon as the sample arrives, it’s increasingly clear that I won’t have time to finish my Phantom by the deadline, and I don’t want to risk spoiling it by rushing things.

All the best

Rowan

Sorry to hear that, Rowan, but nevertheless I’m looking forward to your reviews and that big building project of yours! Good luck and see you in another campaign!
Cheers
Peter

Hi mates,
I declare my Phantom now finished! It was a quite enjoyable build and used all the extra parts of this Limited Edition kit except the white metal seats. I preferred resin seats in the end.
Thanks for this fine campaign and good luck for all to finish in time! :four_leaf_clover: :raising_hand_man:t4:
Cheers

Great Peter.
That Phantom looks amazing, I’ll have to build mine one day.
How did you solve the translucent decals? I did notice that on my kit when I first got it, they looked a bit see through even on the backing paper.

Hi Stephen,
…I did find another two
They hadn’t the outer white ring, but that was ok, because they covered the bigger ring inside. Of course the other decals were here and there translucent, too, but tolerable. If had known before, I could have purchased the set from Xtradecals.
Cheers and thanks for your nice comment!
