Part I
I never really liked this Athearn BN mechanical reefer so a pretty good car to try stuff on…
Some door chipping still to go…

Incredible transformation
Athearn “Primed for Grime” car…masked the patches / ribs then gave it a thinned coat of Tamiya SMOKE… this didn’t really have a dramatic effect… think I could have put down more layers…
patches off then W+N Van Dyck Brown and Raw Umber wash
Tamiya Grime mix on underbody…trucks…wheels…sill
Rustoleum Clear Flat sealed
Superbly done Dave, they look so much better weathered
tim
Quickie job…another older eBay boxcar w/o a box…
Gave it a patch on one side for visual interest…
Fade coat / Krylon Flat / oils / Krylon Flat / Tamiya grime mix / Tamiya XF86 Clear Flat
Thanks Tim…!
I have to agree…they are somewhat sterile out of the box…
Dave the difference is startling. Truly impressive work there.
Thanks Richard,
I am enjoying doing these…
the time investment is minimal with the finished product in 2 or 3 hours max…
An old Roundhouse Rio Grande boxcar kit I believe…
Decided to make it a worn high mileage car…
I still have to do the other side…
Amazing and gaining confidence too. I like they way you have depicted the paint coming of the script revealing the protected original colour
Thanks Tim…
still have to do the other side…
The challenge is to stretch the boundary’s of what u can do without making a total mess of it…
Another day on the learning curve…
Tried chipping the letters on the flip side with a chopstick that I whittled into a chisel…
I guess some of the overspray from the Rustoleum clear flat made it around the back and gave the script a nice hard coat…
Scratching took the script and backing paint off to the bare plastic…
On to Plan B
An Athearn Genesis FRISCO 50’ boxcar…
I got this one 2nd hand…broken trucks…missing a step…
Fixed the trucks, used a wire for the broken step for now
Have to find some aftermarket steps…
Tried scraping the FRISCO logo down to the bare paint on one side, but the white backing was hard as rock…
Rusted both sides to a degree…patched stencil/road number and fading/dirt
