Thank you!
Those would have been USMC at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. But those tank battalions added various additional protection to the hull and turret sides. Or for a US Army M4A3 with deep wading thru is and a dozer blade, look for photos during the Philippines and Okinawa Campaigns.
And now, finally, some OD paint on my beast… first a coat of AK Real Color Olive Drab No.9 on the center areas… followed by a lighter misted on coat of Gunze Aqueous Olive Drab (2) to tone it down and blend it all… 1st and second stages
also over the weekend I started cobbling together a figure for the loaders hatch
This guy is an Italeri torso, Tamiya arms, and a Ultracst head… more to come soon…
Man, that’s looking great!!!
Thanks Yo. Now comes the fun of painting all that stowage…
That’s second only to painting road wheels for me. hahaha
Thankfully I already have that part out of the way
Today I was able to get the base colors painted on to the stowage items
I still need to do shadows and highlights on the items, but I think that this is a good beginning… decals to applied sometime soon…
I am thinking of hopping in! I am no Sherman expert that is for sure. Anyone know if this kit can be used for one in North Africa?
I have a diorama in mind. All the markings are from Syria. I found some markings sheets with Mk III in North Africa but I can’t tell if they are direct vision or not and some have the more curved mud guards
Hi, Is this now closed or still going?
Excellent.
Good picture.
Just completing a Sherman Dozer using the Dragon Mk III Kit. .Looking good.
That one is suitable, yes. Probably not for early on, like El Alamein, because the kit doesn’t have “direct vision” flaps but periscopes in front of the driver’s hatches (see my model below ) but you could certainly build it as a tank in, say, Tunisia.
For my own Sherman III, with the water cans made, I also added the bracket (whatever that may be for) on the side of the hull and hung three helmets on the turret. Oh, and I finally added the handles to the drivers’ hatches:
The cans and track aren’t glued on yet, I’ll only do that after painting. The photos of the real tank also show something on top of the ammo box, but I can’t figure out what that was. I want to say it’s a saw, but that seems rather unlikely.
I was hoping to build one around the Tunisia time frame so that works perfect! Do you happen to have any photos of this variant in Africa? I am struggling to find any (again probably don’t know what to look for). I am trying to nail down which markings I need
This campaign is open until (at least) 1 March, 2026.
Michael
I am leaning towards getting an Asuka Mk II for this project idea and using the Mk III have for an Italy tank
The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry were present at El Alamein (with a mix of I believe, Shermans, Grants and Crusaders - a logistic nightmare I should think). They took a hammering at El Alamein - as part of 9th Armoured Brigade; thereafter the remnants were posted to Syria, and thence to Italy, in 1944, so did not see action in Tunisia.
I would have thought it possible, that of the individual tanks that Dragon portray, at least one of them could have been a survivor from El Alamein (as opposed to a re-issued vehicle in Syria) - but clearly that’s supposition.
