I don’t know what I did wrong, but the cowls was don’t fit as they should…
As far as I know, I took extra care that the mounting frame was inserted as far as possible.
Damn … Looks like the main issue is on the wing root curve, is it the same on both sides ?
I don’t know… I try to keep the other side open…
Is that the 1/24 airfix?
If so…you cant have the full engine with panels open and closed. Just the way it was engineered bud. You can trim the inside of the panel to make it fit a bit better. Or you can remove the frame from the side you want closed. The panels will fit, but you might still have an issue with the piping that runs down that side. I had the same issue and kept both lower ones open. Shame to hide the engine anyway Erwin ![]()
That indeed is the kit. I always try to open one side and close the other one. To show what is in there but also the lines of the plane…
Thanks for the advice
I have both the big Airfix Typhoon and F6F on the shelf of doom. With both of them, it was the cowling area. I have no idea why I keep having this trouble with them. Good luck!

The only thing I can think off is that the lower connection points of the mounting frames are not inserted far enough, because of which the alignment of the whole is at the wrong angle…
So belatedly I thought I would join this campaign with my self-sourced Christmas present. Going back to the beginning of the history of the Spit with this
and I’ll do Ver. A, the box cover picture from 1938
It will have to be OOB since I know I going to be squashed for time which will mean my first ever kit provided instrument panel. Hopefully some progress pictures after the weekend.
cheers
Michael
Look forward to seeing your build Michael. I have the 1a in my stash and will be watching with interest how it goes together.
Pete
looks like an interesting kit. i look forward to seeing how it builds.
Joe
i have a question for the spit experts here. i am nearing the end of my build and want to add the antenna. it is mk IXC late version but eduard does not show where it attaches to on the rudder. in fact i can’t find anything on line either. unlike the mk I the rudder on the mk ix goes over the top of the tail fin. i can;t see the antenna being attached to a canvas covered rudder that will cause the line to twist every time the pilot moves it. so where is the attachment located? do i drill a hole in the leading edge of the tail or add a small post to the top of the movable fabric covered control rudder?
Thanks Joe
I think you probably don’t need an antenna wire for your MK IX, but here you can find some helpful information:
Good luck!

A bit more progress on my Spitfire. Base coat is on. Very satisfied with the result so far. Still some fine sanding to do before painting can begin.
Thats looking good Jesper
Looking forward to seeing this one @cosimodo. I have the Mk.Ib in the stash.
With quite some work (some destructive and much more repairs) I managed to get the cowl plates fit properly.
This is what it looks now…
Nice fix Erwin
Nice work here indeed!
I’ve actually gotten going on the Black Spit, but haven’t really had time to post. So here are some progress shots:
The box took a beating in the stash, but the plastic is fine:
I have a choice of markings from the early '60s (the SuperScale sheet) or more modern (Sky’s Decals). Think I’ll probably go with the latter.
Interior is light gray, based on photos I’ve seen. Also, armament and the associated bulges and shell ejector slots were removed, so all that had to go.
And here’s where I am now:
So far so good. Should be ready for paint soon. Any color, as long as it’s black.

i believe your right peter. after reading up what you sent i think i am good as is but i already drilled the hole on the mast so just in the case that a wire needs to be added for future missions it is there. with that i am finished with my build and just waiting for the base to dry and to get around to clearing off my photo area to take some photos.
Joe
Finally got some bench time. A few weeks ago I epoxied a stack of popsicle sticks into the tail to provide support for today’s work.
Drilled a hole into the tail section for the small acrylic rod, which will be bent with a heat gun into a “C” shape to hold the aircraft. The base will be black with the top surface an RAF roundel like my avatar.
(I’ve had that round base forever and used it as a cutting board when I was a teenager…so it’ll need some putty)
