The control surfaces and slats are just dry-fitted at the moment. I give the kit a couple of coats of Klear and let it dry well before doing some weathering. I won’t go crazy, but the aircraft served with a couple of different units and had field-applied overpainting, so it would definitely show signs of a fair amount of use.
I applied the rest of the decals yesterday. Everything went on fine, but I didn’t use the red stencil markings supplied in my kit, because a white fringe shows when they’re applied which just looks wrong. It’s not visible on the sheet, but comes from the underlay for the red ink, so I’ve used the alternative black ones instead. I don’t know if they’re correct for this particular airframe, but they look much better:
Welcome aboard! It’s great to see something from a totally different genre in the campaign.
Wow - seeing Apollo 11 takes me back to when I was a kid, begging my parents to let me stay up late to see the live broadcast of the moon landing! Happy days!
The Hellcats look wonderful! They really do capture the powerful look of the aircraft - and, of course, I’m always going to have a soft spot for British markings.
As you say, the reason for this campaign is dreadfully sad, but I’m glad you’ve enjoyed building the kits. I’ve felt the same with the VW and Gustav.
The Hellcat looks really good in FAA colours. Always had a soft spot for them. The first model I ever built was Matchbox’s Hellcat in the Pacific Fleet markings.
Thanks guys! I really enjoyed building the Hellcats and in FAA colours they look special indeed. Can’t say which I like more. Have 2 more Profipacks and 1 Weekender in my stash. As I have left some decals left over from this DualCombo I can clearly see the Weekender as another FAA Hellcat one day. There’s one marking in ETO camo but with PTO insignias.
Both Hellcats sit now next to my Ilmavoimat Bf 109 from last year. The Hellcats are huuuge! If you know that the 109 is in 1/48, one could think the Hellcats are in 1/32 …
Group, I thought I joined but can’t find anything to prove it. I started a Tamiya Ki-84. Can I continue with it? If not, I can find another True Scale model to enter.
Here is my entry for the GB, Tamiya 1/48 Fw190 D-9. I’ve always wanted to build a 190, and what better way to do it than building it to honour Steffen. This is also my first build this year, so hoping I won’t get bogged down. The plan is to finish it in the RV markings of Stab./JG4.
