The Mustang: NA-73X to the Enforcer

Very sweet details, Peter! Almost a pity to hide it.

Looking forward to see more :slightly_smiling_face:

I promised some photos of my P-51 when it was incorporated into a diorama. The diorama is a combination of my entries for the LUV, P-51, and B-25 campaigns. Very satisfied with the final result. :slightly_smiling_face:

late to the party but here is my entry. i will use the old revell kit. i figure it is easier to sand off the panel lines on the wings than putty them on another.

this kit has been sitting on my shelf for 20 yrs with these decals in them.

i will be doing sx*b double trouble of the 353rd f.g. slybirds. i’ve been intending to do this one ever since i seen it at the military aviation museum in virgina beach.

*Lieutenant Colonel William “Wild Bill” Bailey:
The aircraft’s specific livery represents a 353rd FG Mustang flown by Lieutenant Colonel “Wild Bill” Bailey, Deputy Group Commander, and includes his six aerial victory symbols. He called his original aircraft Double-Trouble because he left two girlfriends at home in the United States; the name for his subsequent Mustang became Double-Trouble Two after another pilot crashed the original.
i hope the decals are still good but i do have two other sets.

Jesper that looks fantastic. Great presentation.

Joe, your post took me down memory lane. I built that exact kit with those exact decals as a kid. What a coincidence. Good luck!

Finally settled down after the move and got some bench time. I’ll be honest, I don’t really know what I’m doing here, but trying to replicate the finish on some period color photos I’ve got. Pretty much trying something, squinting at it, and then trying something else.

Finished up the overall sand oils and then added some chipping around engine panels and a burnt umber panel line wash. It’s getting there…not sure what to think of it. Wish the cowling chipping stood out more.

Pardon the terrible photos. My phone refused to get the color right, so I had to fix as well as possible with edits.

Hi Joe, I put strong rare earth magnets inside the fuselage before closing up the fuselages. Also strong magnets on the clear acrylic rods. That is enough to hold them in place.

The OD is Vallejo as I recall.

That sounds like a great idea. Better than drilling holes. I’ve got a couple of small Star Trek ships that need display stands making and magnets might be a good neat and tidy way of doing it.

working on the cockpit. can’t decide if i want to spend the money on a resin seat or use the kit seat.
added an oil wash for the wood grain floor. can anyone tell me if it should be painted black or left natural wood?

while that dries i worked on the wings.
i sanded the raised panel lines off and tried something i was thinking about, i smeared sprue goo on the leading edge of the wings instead of glue then pressed the halves together and applied liquid glue as usual. the result was a perfect join with no need to use putty to fill the join. just some sanding to clean it up,

Looking good. Love those markings/colors too. Just bought some aftermarket decals to do his Mustang with Tamiya’s kit.

I think I can call my second entry done
Decals and matt finish are on.

Good luck for all who are still at the bench with their Mustangs!

P.S. Upps, I forgot to mount the drop tanks…photo proof will follow tomorrow…
