Torpedo Away!

Got my Kate last week and as usually slow as I am finally got around to posting.

Recd from postie on the 20th of Jan.

Works underway now I have a few extras to go with it.

Finished. It’s a decent kit of, to me, an unusual subject. 98% of the work inside the hull isn’t seen once the “window” is attached.

Excellent Mike! Great work on a very unusual subject! This catches the eye as it is far outside the typical Spitfire and Sherman model piece. Well done

Current state of my workbench…

Had to step back and take in the overhead view.
Sub-assembly and detail painting abound! :hammer_and_wrench::paintbrush:

… Fuselage and wings nowhere to be seen in this image!

Torpedo los! :sweat_droplets:

Rather tidy by my standards

Well with 3 degree F and snow here, it seemed like a great day to hide inside in the workshop for more time with the Revell Schnellboot.

Did some more painting and have base on with much touch up and details to add yet.

Also started looking at some of the crew figures. Seated gunner in 1/72 scale that my Grandson calls “Hans”. I guess back stories build interest?

Well I find myself in a bit of a quandary, I’m still waiting for the Fiat G.55S to arrive, it’s apparently somewhere in the UK postal system!
However some new arrivals, and a item already in the stash are calling out to me, please help me decide although I’m favouring one of them over the others.

After looking at the plastic in the box I feel the A-5 needs an Eduard overtrees to replace the aircraft and I just use the torpedo, extended tail wheel and markings from the Dragon kit.

The Jill is calling louder than the others at the moment.

Well as Jack has done a runner, a gentleman wouldn’t leave poor Jill all alone and unprotected. :joy::rofl::rofl:

Well I could always get a Jack to keep Jill company, although Jack wasn’t carrier based.

So not a Jack of all trades then??

No Jack was a IJN land based fighter designed for high altitude interceptions of the B-29 even though it lacked a turbo charger. When the B-29 bomber campaign switched to low level night raids the Jack was found wanting, so in fact Jack was a master of none and definitely not a jack of all trades.

Ahh so he was in reality then doing jack sh1te.:joy:

Very logical and very admirable. It’s cold here and I just want to hunker down and try to stay warm.

That is a great looking torpedo!

Hi guys!
Made a bit more progress with the Ju 88A-4 Torpedo Plane.

ICM supplies two nicely detailed Junkers Jumo 211 engines which when closed up in their cowls, they’ll never be seen again — really fun to build though. :hammer_and_wrench:

… and the bird’s propellers.

Starboard fuselage details (Bombardier seat). I plan to add Quinta Studio Decals when I’m up to chopping much of the kit profiles. :kitchen_knife:

Pilot and Radio Operator/Rear Gunner seats. Again, Quinta Studio seatbelt decals to follow.

While I was in the mood, I decided to modify the cowl flap profiles by thinning them down before painting them.

Here’s the general look I’m aiming for.

Thanks for having a look!

After a bit of coaxing from @Littorio I’ll dip my toe into this campaign, late though I be! (Hopefully no-one minds?)

This will be part three of my Illustrious Trilogy, featuring aircraft from none other than HMS Illustrious from WW2. The first being a Fairey Fulmar and the second being a Vought Corsair

I started this kit as I needed a break from HMS Punjabi which has become a tedious, expensive and slow build which I’m no longer enjoying, and have become bogged down with.

I needed something to get my mojo back… Let’s hope this is it…

I’ll be using Airfix’s by now, familiar 1/72 kit

And here’s where it gets unusual. I have a PE set from WEM back before they were acquired by Tom’s Modelworks. It’s WEM’s first and I believe only foray into aircraft PE and I don’t even think it’s still available.

The set even includes decals for the instrument panel

Eduard masking set

The chosen colour scheme: obviously the Taranto raid which, IIRC, this aircraft and 824 squadron were transferred to Illustrious for their famous raid on the Italian fleet…

I’ve started in the cockpit prepping the parts, but first colour to go down is the internal walls of the fuselage, with a “dope” colour…

Hopefully I can break my pattern of not being able to finish campaigns with the rest of 2026 to finish the Swordfish

Here’s my first question to the brains trust: Airfix call out indicates that the top face of the cockpit enclosure should be “85” which is “black”… But I would have thought cockpit green is more accurate?

Main build thread is here

Sorry I can’t comment on the correct color scheme, but let me offer a welcome. Glad to see your additions to this effort as the disabling and sinking of the Bismarck was a Swordfish torpedo strike, correct?

Working on the border models Kate and its fighting back at me most the way… lol

Maybe more my old eyes and sausage fingers though.

Indeed they were Swordfish, launched from Illustrious’ sister, HMS Victorious :cowboy_hat_face:
