So tonight I prepared everything for primer. A tip is to leave the windshield out until the paint job is done. It fits perfectly and will save you a masking job. I assume there will be some putty touch ups on the figures after the primer. I allways use Black primer to spot imperfections and I would be surprised if there are non. There is only two M-16s in the MB kit so I have to dig out a Dragon weapons kit to supply the driver with a rifle as well.
I have started the process of placing the flechettes into the hull of the M113 wedgie. I made small holes with the tip of my model knife, then used 32 gauge galvanized steel wire to replicate the flechettes. At first I used pieces of wire that were longer in order to be able to use tweezers to emplace them with the intent to trim them down with nippers after the glue had cured. That did not turn out that well because half of the wires broke away from the holes they were glued into. I am glad I only did a few rows that way.
Yesterday I started to cut the wire to the appropriate size and used a different set of tweezers. The tips to the tweezers are plastic and hold the wire pieces better. That isn’t to say that several went flying off into oblivion from time to time. They may still be a tad too long to be in exact scale, but at viewing distance it works. Now I have to finish with the rest of them.
I think I must just be able to pull off this effect after all.
That’s looking really convincing.
I started painting my 151 today. Started with a layer of Mig OD dark followed by Mig OD light. Then I highlighted a bit with AK light green and Vallejo sand. Finally I sprayed some shadowing using Vallejo OD and Russian green. The goal is to get a sun faded look and so far I´m fairly happy. We will see how it goes.
After a few more hours my build look like this
@ReconTL6 - I can already see it’s going to be another good one!
@Erik67 - lookin’ good, good luck with your build!
I did the basic face painting with oils this evening, and suddenly they don´t look so «walking dead» anymore. There are still painting to be done, but so far I´m pretty happy since figure painting is my weakest skill. Saying that, I really enjoy painting figures and I´m getting a little bit better every time…
Hello!
Those are quite nice figures! I like your holders, too! One thing that bothers me - not that it’s your fault in any way - is that the boys look about 50 years old to me… But I can’t tell you if it’s just me and how I would go about making them look younger…
Good luck with your build and have a nice day

I’m about to take the plunge and do my first serious attempt at a figure. It’s the driver (and maybe passenger) of Tamiya’s German 3.5 ton ANH cargo truck. I probably have 50+ figures in my “parts box” from Tamiya, ICM, Testors, etc. Good practice figgies. I have the “flesh” set from either AK or Vallejo to hopefully “help” and Vallejo’s Panzer Ace uniform colors. We’ll see! LOL.

Cool, I think most vehicles deserve a few figures. My best advice when using acrylics is ad some retarder (for better blending) and use very little paint on the brush when starting to shadow and highlight the flesh parts. It is so easy to “over do” it when the brush is loaded with too much paint.
Agree, all of them will have helmets to cover their bald heads and that will hopefully make them a bit younger
wasn’t sure about the 3/4 cav markings but apparently, they used a few as did 4/12 cav and 1/77 armor 3/4 Cav was with the 25th Infantry Tropic Lightning Div and the 4/12 Cav and 1/77 armor were with the 5th Infantry Red Diamond Division. the decals for this kit seem rather large as does the kit itself could just be me but I look forward to seeing what I can do with it

I have seen this Kit around awhile I have the M48a3 Tamiya Version (in storage) Figured why not and grabbed it. going to be pretty much OOB and will try my hand at weathering some.

a classic Shep Paine build!
Have not seen that kit in many years! The “Three Quarter Cav” was indeed with the 25th Division, and I recall seeing the vehicle markings as “3/4 CAV” (no division codes). But, the Squadron Codes were on the front left (if you were facing the vehicle) and individual unit codes were on the right. The kit has them backwards…(not to say some PFC painted them on wrong mudguards and theres a photo to prove it), but per regulation, theyre incorrect.

Well, I guess the wedgie of the M113 with the flechettes imbedded into its hull was not meant to be. It took a fall that took out some pieces and some of the flechettes. After all of that time spent putting each flechette in place individually it is not a setback that I feel like fixing at the moment.
I will still make a vignette showing the aftermath of a human wave assault. I will place a portion of a sandbagged fighting position in the far left rear corner and rearrange and perhaps add some enemy KIA. The plastic tarp roll is just a place holder for where the sandbags will go.
These are some other possible layouts. The intent of this vignette is to depict the aftermath of facing human wave assaults.
Which figure layout do you find to be most effective?
Thanks.
Cheers,
James
