Your Figure Just Keeps Improving! 2024

Puttied, sanded, and primed my figure again, and it looks much better.

I still discovered some hairline gaps that I need to putty over so I’ll do that and just brush paint on some primer instead of using the primer spray can again.

Been working a little at time on the British WWII infantry.

Nice Don!

I’m still ticking away at my two figures; one German NCO (the left side of the parts) and one Russian ( the right side). Slow progress but still some progress.

I painted the basecoat with AK Interactive Playmarkers and it came out “So-so.” The Playmarkers are more aqueous than the AK Real Color Markers and thus the paint is much thinner. Against smooth primed “skin” of the figure, the Playmarkers act like watercolor paint, thus, they don’t replace Vallejo Flesh paint colors which is much thicker in coating. I had to repaint the flesh with Vallejo for better coverage with a paintbrush and I soon discovered that doing so strips the Playmarkers, leaving a skin of marker paint and some lumps and bumps that had to be wiped away. AK Playmarkers won’t really replace a paintbrush for certain kits, and it makes sense since Playmarkers were meant for small Wargaming figures, not 1/12 scale figures.

I roughly painted in the basecoat with a brush since the AK Interactive Playmarkers were too watery and translucent. If I had to do it again, I would spray the Flesh with a spray can (I’m not sure if I have Flesh color in my collection of spray cans) because the Vallejo Flesh paint gave my figure skin texture (Live and learn as I didn’t thin down the Flesh paint with thinner due to the little time I spent on my hobby desk and I was in a rush). I believe using a Flesh spray can would have resulted in a much smoother skin without brush marks caused by the underlying AK Playmarker Flesh paint peeling off from the brush strokes. I thought that I could be lazy and paint the entire 1/12 figure with AK Markers; I was wrong…definitely not the AK Playmarkers as they behave like watercolor paints.

I still have a lot of work to do—drybrushing, washes, shades and shadows, highlights, detail painting, etc.

The guns were sprayed with Tamiya Matt Black in a spray can and they can out with a smooth finish.

Well, it’s been quite a minute since I’ve been on the forum. My apologies to @SamS for not seeing your DM, but I see that you got it resolved and I’m glad you’ve joined the campaign! Everyone’s work is looking great, and I will definitely keep an eye on everything and be sure to watch out for the end of the campaign. Cheers!

On the “home stretch” here. I glued in the handgun and M4/M203 carbine to the figure, drybrushed, inked, washed, and detail painted.

I still need to find a base for it and mount it in addition to some final touches.

Looks like the campaign has run out of momentum, but good to see you still making some progress @Trisaw

It’s still ticking along! I’m aiming to have my two figures complete and submitted in the next couple of days.

Like an idiot I got distracted with an Academy brand Panzer Mk IV that has been a right sod! Before you know it two months has gone by! Now that I’ve finished it I’ll put up a photo of that model elsewhere but suffice to say I’ve had some stern words with that bloody thing and it’s put me right off Academy tanks.

I’m sure everyone here will be on schedule for finishing.

Whoa! I didn’t realize it’s due at the end of the month. I’ll get back to mine and I think I can get them done. I just wasn’t paying attention to the deadline…

I ran out of primer just as I was getting to priming my figures! (I also dropped one and the head popped off, so i need to fix that) I was able to prime my test figure, so I can work on that until I go to the hardware store.

I also wasn’t keeping track of the campaign end date. Will try to at least finish the pilot figure from the Monogram f-100d.

I’m hitting submit on my two figures. Thanks heaps for allowing me to join this campaign late. Very much appreciated!

The first is the Alpine brand German NCO. I think there’s some bits that are ok, like the map satchel, but I’m still not happy with the face. I’ve got him standing in the pose as per box art. Base is one I’ve used for other models so nothing special.

Second is the Miniart brand Russian. Again, not happy with the face. I adjusted a few things like making his tunic longer and putting a new belt buckle on. I’ve got him adjusting his weapon sling as he walks along. Base is the same as for the other figure.

This just reinforces that I need more practice!

Thanks again and looking forward to seeing everyone else’s final submissions!

Okay gang just to follow up on my earlier September 2024 photos of the 1/48 scale RAF officer, I am also calling this one complete. This is my submission for your review in the campaign.

Many thanks to all that have shared their talents in these posting. A special thanks to the organizers that provide such a special opportunity through this forum to share and learn skills together. I had a lot of fun! - Stuart

I found my figures…

A first base coat on the smock and helmet. Still have to finish the trousers, but I’m back on it!

Trousers done. Base color down for camo smock. The top pic showed me a couple of places I had missed in the base coat.

That is a MATTE finish paint system you’re using.

Andrea miniatures acrylics are really MATTE.

Maybe a small hommage to andrea miniatures paints is appropriate. My collection of their paints keep growing. Years ago I started using their blue set. I was painting 28mm napoleonic wargaming figures and they were so perfect for that. I could make several variants of dark blue from that, it was so easy to use and so forgiving. Dead matte.

I’ve slowly added sets and individual paints. I have found it hard to use Vallejo paints after using these as these are so strongly, yet finely pigmented. You can put on a really opaque base coat and you can thin them a lot without any special thinner or retarder to make thin glazes or washes. Again really forgiving.

People who paint way more than I do (you can read their reviews online) observe that the matte sometimes leads to a kind of unwanted texture. I can see that critique in a few colors, but mostly they are really great for figures.

The set I’m using for these figures is waffen ss autumn colors and they are really great for figs like this. If you’re in N. America they aren’t that easy to find, but I’m finding them worth the effort so to do.

Andrea really is/was very good!
I still use paints I bought at least 20 years ago, allthough they need replacing now.
